Today I went on a package tour, 2 hours drive west of Bangkok (can't remember place names right now) Took a long tail boat ride to a floating market. Ten years ago the locals traded their groceries here from their canoes as they passed each other on the canals but now they are very much geared up for the tourist trade, still a good visit, though it reminded me why I don't do package tours. Rode an elephant through the woods then went to a WW2 cemetary and walked the rail bridge over the River Quai, Built by Japanese POWs and local forced labour. 100,000 died during its construction and it was bombed and rebuilt twice. Today it still carries rail traffic, there's a warning sign warning tourists to get off bridge quick when train approaches. none did thankfuly.

re river Kwai
I'm envious. I'd have loved to see that bridge. I've seen the film a few times, but it's not the same. Yes you're wise not to have chosen to take a packaged holiday. We did twice, once to Butlins (that was your fault) and once to Tunisia and I swore never again. Had another text from Dom to say she'd heard from you. You wont want to come home when you see the temperatures here. It's winter. I have to get my eye done soon. I can't see to drive in the dark anymore thanks to that bloody eye. Still, treatment starts soon with a needle in the eye. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M DOING THIS! A needle in the eye!!! love from us mum and dad
