DAY 35
We got up around 7.15am so we could go and get stand by tickets for the Jimmy Fallon show. We had breakfast at the deli downstairs, this time i had a cinnamon and raisin bagel with cream cheese and scott had a sausage and egg English muffin. My bagel was really nice - i am starting to actually like them! I gave up on starbucks coffee too and tried one from the deli - a hazelnut one and it was actually pretty good. We headed over to the nbc studios at about 8.45am and waited in line for about 15minutes. It was a pretty miserable rainy day in new york - the first rain we had here - so we all waited undercover. We had an obnoxious French woman behind us who complained about everything from the word “umbrella” to the drivers to new york to why they don’t let you smoke under covered areas. She was horrid, but did keep us entertained! An NBC woman came out just after 9am and handed us our standby tickets. These tickets are not a guarantee that you will get in to the show taping but we did get ticket #7 & 8 so we were pretty hopeful we would get in. We just had to be back at the studios at 3.45pm to see if we get in.
From the studios we headed up 5th Avenue as there were a few shops Scott wanted to check out. It was very rainy and we soon discovered that shops don’t generally open until 10am. So we found a starbucks and scott grabbed a coffee. Once it hit 10am we made our way to FAO Schwartz which is a really big toy store in New York and is the one that featured in the movie big - it has the giant piano that you walk on. The store had some really cool giant stuffed toys and lollies and everything you can imagine. The one thing however that Scott really wanted to check out was the muppet area. You can actually design your own muppet and they will make it up for you. After some deliberating about our luggage weight i managed to convince Scott to make one. As they made it up we wandered around the store until it was ready. The muppet was really cool!! We then headed out to Crate and Barrel which was next door. Scott wanted to check it out as it is relevant to his work. We didn’t stay too long. Next stop was the NBA store to get refunds on our Knicks tickets which was fine. We then tried to find where the People’s Court is filmed and also the Superhero Supply store for Scott, but we failed on both counts. By this stage we were pretty saturated and cold. We wanted to get tickets to a broadway show for tonight, but decided to drop the muppet back at the hotel first as it was so wet outside. Once we dropped the muppet off we headed back into times square to look into broadway tickets - ideally we wanted to see wicked. As we were so cold, we decided to finally buy an umbrella but it may have been too little too late by this stage! We found out that the tkts booth doesn’t sell discount tickets to wicked, so we walked to the theatre to see if we could find any tickets, but they only had tickets left for $250 each - a little more than we wanted to pay. So we decided we’d grab some lunch and then line up in the rain for cheap tickets at the booth in times square. We ate at TGI Fridays as it was close and we wanted somewhere to sit down. I grabbed onion rings and a salad and Scott grabbed a burger. We washed it down with some cocktails - gotta say the long island iced tea is better at home!!
We headed to the tkts line which was quite long by now and tried to decide whether we’d have enough time to get tickets and get over to Nbc for Jimmy Fallon. The tickets went on sale at 3pm and we needed to be at the studios at 3.45pm. We decided we’d give it a go and if the line moved too slow we’d come back after Jimmy Fallon as they stay on sale until 8pm. While i waited in line Scott went back to the hotel to change his jumper and get one for me as we were so wet and cold. Once the tickets went on sale at 3pm the line moved really fast and we decided we’d get tickets to The Adams Family starring Nathan Lane. We got our tickets at about 3.30pm but i was in such a hurry to get to the NBC studios that i even forgot to get my change!!
We ran across to the NBC studios and finally after a few misdirections found where we needed to be. We checked in and got told to wait downstairs at 4.15 and they would tell us then if there were any stand by seats available - it all depends on how many people they get that don’t turn up with reserved seats. At 4.15pm, we got told there were about 71 stand by tickets that would get honoured and we then had to follow someone upstairs and line up in order of our ticket number. They said they’d let the first 20 in as it was a guarantee and the others would get let in once they had final numbers. As we were getting our wristbands and official tickets, one of the staff singled us out with a bunch of other people. We were chosen to be in the “band seats” which basically meant when the musical act came on, we would be on stage dancing with them. The music act for the night was Duffy. After waiting for what seemed like forever, we headed downstairs, got checked through security and ushered into the studio. We were in the back rows but as the studio was fairly small we still got a really good view.
The guests for the show were Dr Phil, Nina Dolbric from the Vampire Diaries, Duffy and the guys who made the new Xbox Kinect. Jimmy was really funny and the guests were pretty good. He had some funny segments and clips as well. The biggest surprise of the night was that everyone in the audience was given a free Xbox 360 Kinect - they had only gone on sale at midnight that day. Just crazy!! They are worth like $400 US each. The whole crowd as you can imagine was pretty psyched after that! When it was time for Duffy to take the stage we got ushered behind the stage into platforms where we had to stand and just basically dance and look like we were having a good time. It was pretty awesome!! Definitely think we got on TV!
Once the show finished, we all left the studio and got given our Xbox’s which was just awesome, the only problem it posed for us was the weight of them and how we were gonna get them both home!! The weight of each box would have been about 10kg each i think. We discussed our options as we walked back to the hotel to drop them off before the Adams family show and decided we’d buy another extra suitcase and do some re-arranging and just pay the extra $35 to check another bag.
We grabbed a drink before the show in times square and then headed over to the theatre which was only a block away. Our seats again were pretty good, considering they were ½ price. We were in the orchestra section about 15 rows back just to the left of the stage. The show started at 8pm and it was absolutely fantastic. Nathan Lane did a brilliant job as Gomez and it went really quickly. When the show finished up at about 10.30pm, we looked at some luggage shops at times square before finally settling on a $50 suitcase that we thought would do the job. We stopped by our local deli to grab some late dinner - we got a pizza slice each, a cookie and a few beers. We took our dinner back to the hotel room so we could try and re-organise our bags. We also got confirmation that our flights were all OK for Friday - they had just changed flight number. We unpacked everything and repacked it all to try and keep under the 50 pound weight restriction - hopefully they all come in under! We watched the Jimmy Fallon show when it came on TV and we both made some brief appearances when Duffy was on and also when they announced the free xbox. We’re famous!!!! I stayed up for awhile typing blogs and finishing my beer. Probably our latest night yet in New York i was in bed by about 2am.

Lucky you!!!
What a great surprise, a bit like Oprah, she is always giving things away to her audience. Unfortunately I don't even know the show you went to or the person. What a bore I must be, or don't have pay TV I guess. You will need your own private plane to bring you both and all your new belongings home. Your muppet is cool Scott!
