DAY 31
We got up at 6am to finish packing, shower and head to the airport. We ate breakfast - i had a blueberry bagel and Scott had a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit (sorta like a scone). We checked out and grabbed a taxi from out the front. The airport was only a 10 minute ride and being Sunday no traffic. We checked in no problem and went through security. It was easy, but still had to take off shoes/jackets etc.... Now waiting for plane for NYC, hoping to get in around lunchtime so we have the afternoon to find our bearings, get a Halloween mask and find where the parade is!
The plane we got on was a really small plane, smallest I’ve been on travelling from one city to another. It only had 3 seats the whole way across but it was a smooth flight and we got to JFK airport in amount 45min. First celebrity we spotted on our trip was at the airport clearing security - Gavin Rossdale from Bush - how exciting!! Got our bags easily enough and got in a cab to Manhattan, it was a $45 flat rate from airport plus tolls. We
arrived at our hotel - St James Hotel, at about 11.30am and got checked in no problem. The hotel is fairly old and basic, but it has all you need in New York - a bed! The room has an old fire place and is fairly roomy for New York. The location is just fantastic though - about a 1 min walk to Times Square! We grabbed lunch at a deli next door - I had an eggplant wrap which was really nice. We walked into Times Square and took some photos, went to the info centre to find out where to buy Knicks tickets and bought some souvenirs. We then walked up to the Hershey store and the m&m store - and i was really restrained and didn’t buy anything!! We found our way to the NBA store and bought tickets to the NBA Knicks game on Tuesday night at Madison Square Gardens. Tickets were $100 and we are at the back, but it will be cool to see. We also bought some Knicks t-shirts to wear to the game. From here we went to the Rockefeller Centre, where there was an icerink in the middle of the block
and a Lego store. There was lots of cool stuff in the Lego store and Scott was very restrained and only bought a couple of things. We checked out the nbc store and bought a few t-shirts from the office and chuck. We also did an nbc studio tour which was pretty cool. We got to see Dr Oz’s set and learnt some of the tricks of the trade. The studios are all very small there so to make it seem like they are bigger, Dr Oz has a revolving platform for the audience at the front that moves with him so there is always audience behind him. They also only film the first 4 or 5 rows of the audience so you can’t see how few rows there are. The set Dr Oz is in used to be Conan O’Brian’s studio. Next stop was the Jimmy Fallon studio, which again looks really small - but they use wide lenses and a lot of direct cuts to make it seem bigger. The studio used to be the studio Johnny Carson used. Next along the tour was the control room, which we just got to see from the outside but it
was cool. We then had a look at a part of the building that Jim Hensen and some crew from the Muppets decorated. It used to be part of their backstage area and one afternoon they all started to decorate the plumbing pipes as Muppets. Over the years the room was part of people dressing rooms, until the decided to open it up as a bit of a homage. It was cool. Next stop was the Saturday Night Live studio, which was the biggest one so far, but still fairly small. We found out the youngest person to hold Saturday Night Live was Drew Barrymore when she was 7. Also, Sinead O’Connor has been banned from cbs forever after she ripped up a picture of the pope on live TV. After the tour we headed back into Times Square where we bought some Halloween outfits. I got a red cape and devil horns and Scott got a clowns wig. We checked out the giant Toys R Us which is in Times Square and its pretty massive - has a Ferris wheel, ice cream shop and tonnes of toys! We then walked back an Irish pub on the street our hotel
is on. We grabbed an early dinner at the pub - i got a veggie burger and Scott got Shepherds pie. We stopped by our room at the hotel to drop off all our stuff and put our costumes on. We then headed out to the Halloween parade in greenwich village. We walked about 30 blocks to the parade and it was absolutely packed - much busier than we thought it would be. They had the whole of 6th avenue blocked off from 16th street all the way down to where the parade began. We found a spot near 14th street, but we really couldn’t see a thing. We watched for about ½ hour but gave up soon after, as all we saw was the top of people’s heads. It was cool though to see all the people out and about in costume - there were some great ones out there. We then walked back 30 blocks to grab some beers at heartland brewery on 43rd street. We had some beers there before heading back to the hotel at about 10.30pm. Busy day!
