Sandy Bay - Exmouth
This is one of my favourit photos. It really was beautiful. Exmouth Exposure Tour
Day 1 - Perth to Kalbarri (1 night stay)
Day 2 - Kalbarri to Denham in Shark Bay (6 night stay)
Day 8 - Denham to Coral Bay (1 night stay)
Day 9 - Coral Bay to Exmouth (3 night stay)
This was one of our most favourite or maybe the most favourite experience of our travelling so far. It was excellent. We saw some amazing things, met some great people and definitely have fab memories we will never forget.
On our way up to Kalbarri on the first day we visited the Pinnacles. Basically they are Limestone rocks that kinda grow from the ground. Some of them are about 4 metres high. Its a big tourist attraction here so it was worth seeing but Phil didnt seem to impressed 'They're just a bunch of rocks!' he said!
Our second day was jam packed with things to do and this was where the fun began! On our way up to Denham we visited some amazing gorges - Natures Window, The Loop and Z - Bend Gorge. We actually climbed down to the bottom of one of them. This is when we had the chance
to absail. I couldnt do it so I egged Phil on and he eventually did. He was shaking loads when he got to the bottom! He had the chance to do one absail backwards and another one forwards. Phil only did the one backwards, I think that was enough for him! I wasnt told beforehand that we were climbing to the bottom of one of these gorges and then had to climb all the way up - good bit of fitness but terrible if you have a height phobia! But I was ok, you just have to get on with it dont you!?
We got to Denham later that night. The hostel was lovely it was like your own little holiday home. Our room was so cheap and it had an ensuite and a kitchen! Usually you have to share with 20-30 other people and it had a really nice swimming pool so we already loved the place. That night people from our bus went to the pub, we met them all an hour before closing and had a really good time. After the pub shut these 'cool, a nightclub' but how wrong was I! We all jumped into this
The Pinnacles
The sand was so orange and the sky so blue van that dropped us off in the middle of nowhere. We were all really confused and wondered where the hell we were when about 15mins later this other van came around the corner with a Hot Tub attached to the back of it! People were already in it drinking and having a laugh. They call it the 'Mobile Hot Tub'! Theres me thinking it was a nightclub! We couldnt get over it, not often you see that! There is a hot spring near by and thats where they get the water from, it was like a boiling hot bath! Lovely! It was a really good night and a night of madness! Thats pretty much what our stay in Denham was like - full of activities and good laughs! Which is why we extended our stay from 2 nights to 6 night and even then we didnt want to leave.
The next day we went on a boat trip with all the backpackers organised by the owner of the hostel - John and his mate - Jamie. It was a great day. We saw sharks, wrays, dolphins and turtles. He stopped the boat in the middle of nowhere and we all
got out to look for sharks, wrays and turtles ourselves. Me and Phil saw a few sharks swin around our feet! Then Jamie actaully caught a turtle for us all to have a closer look and we actually held it (as you can see in the photos) it was so heavy! It was a great day, everyone drinking beer and having a fab time. The atmosphere was great.
Another day we went on a pearl farm to see how pearls were made which was really interesting. We actually helped them out farming for the day. It was fun and now we both know all there is to know about producing a pearl!
John took us to have a BBQ out in the bush, using a fire which was different and then he took us to the Hot Valve. Basically it's a valve that poors out water from the hot spring under the ground. All the guys got carried away and started rugby tackling everyone to the ground. It was such a laugh!
I forgot to mention that along the way we met 3 scousers (need I say anymore!) Frank, Steve and Phil. What a laugh they were, typical scousers (although
Already I cant remember what this beach is called! Damn!
But the water was all different colours of blues and greens because of the sea grass and coral in the sea. It looked really cool. I dont think they nicked anything from us!! he he) Phil got on with them really well and as soon as they found out he was born in Manchester and supported United that was it - the banter had started! They were such a laugh.
On our last day we bought a few boxes of wine (or as they call them in Oz - a box of Goon!) sat around the pool playing drinking games and having a real good time. In the evening the Scousers took us to the Hot Tubs, these hot tubs are for tourists but because it was late no one was there. We got the music playing, few drinks on the go sitting in this boiling hot hot tub. Great stuff! When do you get the chance to do that in England!?
We were so sad to leave the next day, we had such a fab time there and met loads of people. The owner of the hostel was a bloke from Birmingham - a typical lad. He made sure that at least every ther day there was something for us to do and it was always free which is exactly what you want when
you're backpacking. It was excellent.
We only ended up staying in Coral Bay for one night instead of 5 because Easyrider messed up our plans and because ot was Easter there was no accomodation but it did actually work out OK. We headed to Exmouth the next day and headed to Turquiose Bay. Which was beautiful. As soon as you get there you can see why it is called 'Turquiose Bay' the water was beautiful and so warm. The snorkeling was great, we saw so much. I would say it was better than when I went the the Great Barrier Reef - which is saying something!
For our three nights in Exmouth there was no accomodation anywhere so we had to hire out a tent which was fine at first! Until I found out the zip was broke so any kind of insects could climb in, then the next morning at sunrise, about 6,15am it was absolutley boiling hot in there so we had to get out of the tent and start our day - how early is that!? (well it is for us - we're not used to getting up until 10!) and then the second day one
of the rods had broke so our tent had collapsed! What a nightmare! so on the last night we had to sleep in our rented car! Also by this time I had no clean clothes, hadnt washed my hair in ages, couldnt have a clean shower and feel fresh - yuk! But its all part of backpacking (thats what I have to keep telling myself!) Apart from that, Exmouth was really good! We hired out a car for the 2 days we were there and saw lots of different places. We visited Turquiose Bay again and this time saw a Leopard Shark, lots of fish and a Blue Spotted Wray. It was great. We also went to Sandy Bay which was just beautiful and so peaceful.
From what Ive seen of Western Australia it is absolutely amazing! The beaches are so beautiful. I would even say they are better than Thailand Beaches. I never thought I would see such blue skies, turquiose water and white sands here. I couldnt get over it.
This trip has been great. The experience is definitely one you will never forget. We dont want this to end!
We're back at Rachaels now. I
The Easyrider bus!
This is what we travelled all those miles in! was so looking forward to getting back to hers, having a decnt shower and wash all my clothes. Its good to get a bit of stability back. We leave Perth next weekend when we will be heading to Brisbane for 2 months. We are going to hire out a van and do it that way - something different. We're really looking forward to it.
Anyway, I think thats enough reading for you - although Ive left out so much!
I'll write again soon xx
Ps - CONGRATULATIONS Claire and Dan and your new baby girl - Talliah.
