Here we are again. It's now Wednesday evening and we are still feeling the jet lag. This morning after checkout from the Hotel Pfaff, Vanda and I were off to see the highest waterfall in Germany. It was located just across the street from the hotel, a nice uphill walk. The scenery was beautiful, very green, lush and misty, and it was absolutely worth the free admission. Due to time constraints, we chose not to hike to the very top.
After the waterfall we had a big decision to make - visit the Triberg city museum or go to Furtwangen and visit the German Clock Museum (Deutsches Uhrenmuseum). Why was this a big decision? Because I wanted to buy a cuckoo clock in the worst way and Vanda wasn't nearly as keen on the idea. We went to the clock museum and had a lovely time. The guide book warned us that the museum was hard to find and it wasn't kidding. The first time through the town, the sign we saw said take a left - we did and ended up heading out of town. Circling back around to the sign, we noticed that it gave two directions to
the museum - the one we had previously taken, which was for cars, and one for buses. This time we took the one for buses and ended up in a narrow one-way street with parking on both sides (never did find out where the buses went). At the end of the street was a school and attached to it was the museum. After finding parking two blocks away we walked through the rain (yep, it was back) and enjoyed a great visit. Vanda especially enjoyed the displays of Black Forest cuckoo clocks as it gave her a better appreciation of what I wanted.
After the museum we ventured into a drug store to buy a few sundries such as bath soap/gel (our hotel only supplied us with hand soap about the size of a quarter and about as thick as 3-4 quarters), a wash cloth (the hotels do not supply these either), and bottled water. Then we had lunch at a very nice cafe. Ever have mixed veggies with a fried egg on top? Ask Vanda about that. She ate it all in spite of turning up her nose at the runny egg when it was served.
Then
it was back to Triberg for one last look at the cuckoo clocks. Yesterday I had spent over two hours looking and asking numerous questions to learn about them: what was good, what did hand-carved mean, movements, was it really made in Germany and not in China, and so forth. I had narrowed the search down to two shops: a large one run by a fellow named Oli, and a smaller one, run by an older fellow, Herr Burger. Today, we visited both shops and narrowed the search down to two clocks at Herr Burger's. He had a beautiful, large clock with a farm motif, including hand painted animals and figures. I really liked this clock and Vanda did, too. He also had a traditional Black Forest hunting scene clock, with elaborate hand-carved embellishments. What a hard choice! We chose the second clock for the cabin, and it will be shipped home for us.
As it was now 4:30, we headed over the scenic byways through the Black Forest to Heilbronn where the Best Western Hotel awaited us. On the way we went through the village of Leingarten, where Vanda's Link ancestry is from and where tomorrow's adventure will
begin.
By the way - please make sure and ask Vanda about the salad bar at dinner at the Best Western restaurant.
Good night all.
