We had a lovely week with Louise, Colin, James and Lachlan staying at their beautiful home in Southlake Texas. Highlights included watching James play baseball and tennis, Lachlan play soccer, both the boys excel at their sports. Lachlan also managed to ride his bike without his training wheels while we were visiting.
On our first full day, Colin took Ron, Lachlan and I on a tour of the park cities of Dallas, the homes and gardens were beautiful and for lunch we visited a original drug store with a soda fountain.
On our second day Ron and I visited the Sixth Floor museum at Dealey Plaza which is located on the sixth and seventh floors of an early 20th-century warehouse known in 1963 as the Texas School Book Depository. The building became the focus following the shooting of President John F. Kennedy (JFK) as evidence was found showing that shots were fired from the sixth floor, and Depository employee Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the president's murder. On President's Day 1989, The Sixth Floor Museum opened, the historical exhibition on the sixth floor highlights the impact of Kennedy’s death on the nation and the world. Two key evidentiary
areas on the sixth floor have been restored to their 1963 appearance. Both Ron and I found the museum very interesting and thought provoking, so many questions regarding the shooting seemed to still be unanswered. We walked around the area and viewed the grassy knoll and the memorial.
Friday we all had a night out at the Baseball to see the Dallas Rangers played the LA Angels. It was a close game with the Angels winning at extra innings, making a very exciting match. At the end of the match the fireworks were very impressive, they certainly put on a large display, everything seem to be big in Texas.
Over the weekend Southlake held their October Fest, with lots of market stalls and we were surprised to see the wiener dog (dachshund) races. Saturday night we went to the local Japanese Hibachi restaurant where we had our own chef cook at the hot plate in front of us, he put on quite a show tossing his utensils and food with abandon.
Sunday night we all went to Dallas to attend the State fair, Ron was astounded at the variety of fried foods available, we watched the pig
races and viewed the car displays. There was so much to see and do at the fair without even going on an amusement ride.
We were so lucky to have Colin drive Ron and I around each day, from visiting shopping centres to touring the local sights. Little Lachlan took a shine to Ron while we were visiting and they were often to be seen walking hand in hand.
We looked forward to the end of each day when James would come home from school and Louise from work, although Lachlan and Colin certainly kept us entertained during the day.
The week visiting went so quickly, we will be sad to leave. The boys had grown so much since my last visit in November, they are certainly thriving in the care of Colin and Louise and the Texas enviroment.
