We have spent our first full day here in Rome. Our B&B is in an old section of, not to be confused with Ancient, Rome. We have a room on the 4th floor--5th in the US--with no air conditioning. Two rooms share a bath down the hall--very easy so far. It's about 90 during the day and very muggy. Last night it dropped to only about 70. I slept hard till about 4am and then I was wide awake. Fun. Out and about on 4 hours sleep.
When we left the B&B for the morning we walked across the Tiber river to a square that had an open air market and had breakfast. I had the "Roman" breakfast: a croissant, fresh, fresh orange juice and a cappucino. That croissant was the best thing ever!! More butter than carbs I'm sure! And Ted had an American breakfast: an omelet. Only it came on the plate in separate units: the eggs scrambled into a flat circle, a piece of bacon, a slice of swiss cheese and a piece of ham. Assembly optional! And American coffee--I was surprised he wouldn't try the Italian way.....then we were off to see 10 sites that Ted figured we could knock out before dinner.
First we found the Campidoglio which is a square designed by Michaelangelo along with 2 museums. Free audioguides kept us informed of what statuary we were looking at when....After a couple hours of walking, I could feel my toes rubbing on the sides of my sandals. I think my feet are slightly swollen from dehydration since these sandals fit perfectly when we were home. By the 4th hour, I had blisters on 4 toes of my right foot and a big one on the side of my left foot. So after consulting our guide book, we took a taxi back to the square where we had breakfast (Campo di Fiori) and bought a pair of heeled flip flops that had been be-dazzled! Since it's been years since I have worn real flipflops, I knew my skin between my toes would be the next to blister. By now, it was 2pm and time for home to relax before heading out again. We'd seen 5 of Ted's agenda items......
Once home, I wanted to elevate my feet, hopefully to get some of the swelling down. I propped my feet up, put my head down--and fell asleep for 2.5 hours!
I have band aids all over my feet and we bought some more when we walked to Piazza de Santa Maria in Trastevere for a beer and people watching. Then we crossed the cobblestones to have dinner and more wine.....On the way back we found some great little shops--one had only shoes and purses, so it was an instant stop. I took pictures to send to my sisters to see if any one style or color caught their eye....and back home to open the windows to the breeze and to take a cool shower. Next up: reducing the size of the blisters so I can wear my shoes tomorrow without crying!
