San Antonio, Texas.
What a FANTASTIC city! San Antonio is by far one of the most fun places I have ever visited!!
We arrived in the early afternoon yesterday after a very short drive from Austin. But right prior to our departure, I purchased a beautiful pair of cowboy boots from Allen's Boots. They are simply the most beautiful pair of shoes I have every bought for myself! I am totally excited about them!!
Once we got here, it immediately began to pour down rain. We got settled and waited for the rain to stop and then hit the streets to take in some of the sights. Of course, we headed directly to The Alamo. Nearing the time at which the entire complex closes, there were hordes of people - everyone vying for that uninterrupted, "no strangers in the background" photo of the facade of the building. Talk about an exercise in futility! We stood patiently awaiting our turn, but tourists are tourists and everyone was looking out for themselves. Funny how a really old building can stir folks up like that!!
Very interesting on the inside -
cameras are not allowed inside the building and because it is considered a sacred shrine, Jim had to take off his hat. We stood and spoke with one of the docents and learned about the significance of the site in Texas history, a little about the battle and how "remember the Alamo" became a rallying cry for Texans - still used to this day.
Brian J! We never did see PeeWee's bike in the basement.
After the visit to the Alamo, we wandered the streets looking for a portal to the subterranean Riverwalk. Deep below the city streets, a whole second city exists. The banks of the San Antonio River are lined with bars, restaurants and shops - tons of people! We stopped at a few very rowdy places and had a great time! The night brings out a totally different vibe to the city - exciting with everyone dining outside on the riverbanks, strolling from place to place. Being so close to water and because it rained a few times during the day, the humidity was fierce! But each time you passed an open door, a gush of air conditioned cold
cooled you right off.
My favorite place was called Dick's Last Resort. There, we enjoyed mojitos and the banter of a feisty bartender. It was loud and raucous with an employee of the restaurant wandering around making funny paper hats and tying helium balloons to women's hair.
On day two of San Antonio (Thursday 7/29), we ate waffles in the hotel and then headed to the Market Center. Alive with flags, sounds of mariachi and tons of shops, the Market Center was definitely the place to go. But it was very hot and quite a long walk. We made it back to the hotel for a little rest and to enjoy the air conditioning. We will head out again once the sun begins to set!
Tomorrow we are heading to Houston and will visit the Bush Presidential Library along the way.
Blissfully, Dena
