Today we were heading towards Portland. We weren’t too sure where we would end up as we had the next few days to get there. After brekkie we jumped in the car and headed towards the worlds crookedest street which is not too far from the Hotel. Lombard Street is the world’s crookedest street and it is famous for the sharp turns and being very steep. We drove down and took a few pics before heading north over the Golden Gate Bridge.
Today the weather was not the best and very foggy. You couldn’t even see the tops of the towers on the bridge. When we got over the other side we headed towards the Muir Woods National Monument which is one of the last stands of old-growth Redwood forests on Earth. It has trees that are up two Thousand years old here and they are just a site to see. We headed up the main trail and stopped along the way to look at these Massive Trees. The walk is flat most of the way (although there are tracks that are steep) and takes you along Fern creek which runs down from Mt Tamalpais . We walk for a
good half hour then headed back to the Visitors centre to get a cuppa and some gifts. I must say if you ever visit San Francisco, Muir Woods is a must see it is truly one of the highlights of our trip.
We soon headed up the West coast on Highway 1 and towards the sea. Dotted along the highway are little coastal towns and fishing villages. The weather was only about 11 degrees celcius but there were still dudes out catching a wave, they must have been keen. The road was very winding and slow due to the traffic and big RVs towing bus size campers. We soon got a bite to eat and carried on up the coast road which hadn’t changed so the pace was still slow which was a bit frustrating as the time was getting on.
We got to Fort Bragg just after 5pm and decided to carry on finding a place to stay. I should have got Gas in Fort Bragg as the next part of the road was very steep and full on and the fuel light was on, Bugger. I wasn’t too worried as the ride down the range was
very steep so I just cruised down in neutral most of the way which was sweet. We ended up getting some Gas at Leggett which is World famous for the road through the tree.
We carried on to Garberville which is about 20 mins up the highway and found a motel as it was just after 7pm and we where buggered. We drove for about 7 1/2 hrs today. I headed down to get some dinner and Abby and the girls got showered and ready for bed. It had been a long day of driving and tomorrow would be the same. Hopefully the weather would be better......
