We left Thailand via bus and boat and crossed the river to westen Loas. Sam lost his Thai arrival / departuare papers so had the pay a charge (or a bribe) of just over 2 quid to the boarder guard to give him an exit stamp.

We were to late to get a bus that evening to where we wanted to be so had to settle for a night in this boarder town where you can pay with 3 different curriencies. Laos is a strange place! The next morning we went to the catch the 9am bus to a small town in northen Laos called Nong Khiaw. The bus didnt end up laeving untill 1pm because they dont leave until the bus is full.

Anyway we were the only two white people on the old bus and the driver was flying round these windy roads with pot holes the size of paddling pools. It was a strange bus ride with people falling asleep on each other. How they slept on these roads I just dont know. It got to about 9.30pm and we stopped at a large town to let people off, we wernt due to get off for another 3 hours at the next stop but we decided that we would escape and get a room at the bus station. They had a fruit stand oppisite so that was tea, and we had a room with a TV so we got to watch two games of the world cup.

We caught a bus early the next morning and arrived at Nong Khiaw just after lunch. The place was one of the most beautiful I've seen, massive limestone rocks firing straight up out of the massive river, and our bungalow overlooked the whole thing. Just the place to lie in a hammock and read my book. (Thats right i'm reading books).

We stayed there a couple of days, we walked to a cave and a waterfall, we only found the cave but it was impressive enough, its where the locals used to run and hide when the area was under heavey shelling during the war.

The kids are really friendly and they chase yopu down the steet shouting hello and goodbye at you.

All in all a great place to of visited. From there we would head south to large town to stop off and sort our visa's out for Vietnam and then down to go tubing. Will fill you in on the fun of tubing next time.

(Having some Camera trouble at the moment will try and get some pictures on next time).
