Walking from our apartment
Just down the road from the Colosseum DAY ONE
Finally we have arrived in Rome. The flight was not too bad as we all slept for a couple of hours. Our taxi was waiting for us when we cleared customs and passport control. Then he dropped us off at our apartment which is fantastic!! We had a shower and then we headed off on our first tour of Rome. Off we went to the Colosseum which is only 5 minutes down the road from where we are staying. It is raining in Rome and we are all rugged up but we dont care, we are here!! We did a tour of the Colosseum, Palantine Hill and the Forum. Good value and the easy way to see everything. We then hopped on the red bus and did a full two hour tour around Rome getting our bearings, also it was raining and we were all exhausted by the end of it. We then went back to the apartment and had a cat nap and then out again, this time for dinner. We were all pretty tired, came home and slept.
DAY TWO
Jenny and I headed off and went to pick up the car. That was an
adventure!! Meanwhile Robyn and Peter were in charge of getting breakfast and finding a car park! Jenny and I made it back with the car and after lying in the gutter to save the carpark Robyn and Peter had done a great job of finding us somewhere close to park. We had a great breakfast of pastries and then headed off again. We caught the red bus and stopped at the Vatican city. We picked up another tour, this time not so good, a three hour tour ended up taking five hours!! Still we saw everything and had a great history lesson along the way. After the Vatican city we went off to the Piazza Navana where we did some people watching and had a great lunch. Then we continued our walk and visited the Panthenon, Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps. We then walked home. A total of 12 hours on our feet walking the streets of Rome! We had dinner in our street on the way home and stumbled into bed at 10.00pm.
The Gully Travellers have done Rome in two days and managed to see all the sites we wanted to. In hindsight the Ash cloud
has done us a favour, not only have we got to see Rome we now have another five days in France travelling down to Burgundy. We have managed to keep smiling and happy even though we have all been tired and stressed and I have a cold!! Still we are having a wonderful time and keep pinching each other as we realise we have finally made the trip of a lifetime.
DAY THREE
Heading off to Tuscany - tune in for the next blog!!
