The National Museum has on display one of the largest collections anywhere. I didn't think about counting the number of cases in the display. Suffice it to say that it fills two large rooms, each with thousands of samples for the public to view. I figure, radiation wise, it is one of the "hottest" rooms in the Czech Republic. Here is a sample of the many pictures I took of the collection ................
--I'm the rock 'nut' in our family. We always have arguments when we are ready to leave a country and come home about whether or not I can carry home the rocks I have found and MUST have. So, I was totally crazy in this museum. We spent hours in the minerals section and have to go back to see the other parts of the museum later. I kept saying, "Take a picture of this of that, oh of this too." Billy was equally fascinated and obliged me by taking close to 100 pictures of the stated 10,000 samples on display. There was also a room of gems made from rocks but that area was off limits to photography. That's ok. I like to see the stones as they are more than after any cutting or polishing. We had found last year that there is a large geological group in the Czech Republic which does lots of work here and in Africa. Now I have seen some of their collections from the past. WOW. Don't dare look at these pictures only in minature. Click on each one and see the greater detail a larger picture can show you. Someone had told us in 2004 that this museum "wasn't worth the time to visit it". Our friend Johanna told us the other day that we would spend all day there. She was the right one to listen to. If this museum were empty and all you could see was the architecture of the building and the pictures and mosaics on floors and walls, it would be worth visiting. Don't miss the National Museum for a viewing of the minerals, zoological, archaeological and paelentological items. Or if you hate nature,(pity you) go there in the evening for a concert. You'll be glad you did so.

National Museum Mineral Collection
Sure hope we have time to see this collection. The photos are fantastic. I am a rock nut like you, Nancy, and have the same problem of having to leave many of my finds behind when we travel or move.
