After miss judging how long it would take for us to get to the airport we ended up having to race though to get to our gate, where we proceeded to sit and wait for over an hour, typically our first flight of our trip was an hour late leaving. We couldn’t quite believe the size of the plane that was going to take us to Australia, it was tiny but as a consolation it was brand new and Jet Star have excelled themselves with their seat…all leather!!!! We flew for 4 and a half hours before landing in Darwin, we had a connecting flight to Sydney about 3 hours after landing, luckily we didn’t have to hang around because it took so long to get through customs, we thought it wise to tick pretty much everything on the list on the boarding card, declaring that we were carrying wood, shells etc etc. Australia are very careful about what your allowed to bring in and with G’s uncontrollable need to buy all craft things on sale we had a lot of stuff to be inspected, eventually we were given the nod though. We waited for a short while before
getting onto our final flight to Sydney, we were immediately reminded how friendly the Australians are with the guy sitting next to T introducing himself to us and proceeded to chat away. Something tells us we’re going to love it here!!!
About 6 hours later we were at Sydney airport getting a taxi to G’s sister’s friends house who insisted we stayed with them, we weren’t complaining, their place is gorgeous and by the beach in Coogee, a lovely little area of Sydney.
This is where our travels end and our new life begins, we now have to job hunt, flat hunt and sort out all little bits and bobs to begin our year living in the land down under!!!!
What more can we say than we have truly had the most amazing time EVER on this trip, we have met and stayed in touch with some wonderful people who we hope to see again soon. We will never forget all the places we have been too and all the things we’ve been up too, we’re thankful we didn’t get sick once and are now looking forward to sorting through our 7,692 photos!!!! With over 24,000 miles
done, practically all overland, over 247 days using 30 trains, 70 buses and 22 ferries, we feel like we could do with a rest!!!!
For those who are interested, please find below our transports costs, we budgeted around 150 euros a day in Europe for 2 people and for the rest of our trip around $50 a day for 2 people, this obviously changes in each country for example where Laos is really cheap we could survive on $20 a day for 2 people but then in Thailand if you wanted to drink it went well over $50 a day for 2 people. And of course there was G’s uncontrollable shopping habit which often blew our daily budget.

Reach and Go
Manchester to Sydney overland
Great blog!
Hey there, just wanted to say thanks for writing such a great blog. My girlfriend and I are very soon emigrating from Manchester to Sydney and are planning a similar trip. We leave the UK in a few weeks time, can't wait! Anyway thanks for all the little tips and stories and we might bump into you in Sydney oneday (currently thinking that we'll end up renting in either Manly, Bondi or Coogee). All the best, Luke
