Thank goodness jet lag did not affect me at all, because I got to go out and about with my host sister, host mom, and my host sister's aunt. We went to Qianmen steet, where there were tons of shops and apparently the number one restaurant for peking duck. (Cora- it's not the restaurant with the duck statue in front.. but hopefully I'll get Ms. Ding to bring me ther sometime, so I can take a picture with it.) We started to walk around and I was pushed into store after store, to look around. While I did not have my wallet on me because I wasn't planning on buying anything, my host mom with her sister decided to pick random things and buy them for me, even though I insisted that they not. My host sister told me that earlier that my dad texted her mom yesterday night, saying, "Did the lovely Michelle already go to sleep," which I thought was really sweet to share with you guys... My host family is actually the sweetest family in the world.
So at the restaurant where I had an early dinner, I tried... duck heart....scorpion...duck soup.. and ate amazing peking duck!! But
Duck
before it got cut up. in the end, I still can't believe that I ate duck heart and scorpion on the same day... I wouldn't really recommend it.. although I may try them again... maybe.
Starting today, I began to try to respond with as many words in chinese to any questions my sister asked in english, and whenever I did her mom and aunt were extremely pleased and told me that I was really good at chinese and kept saying how pretty I was... all I could do was say: xiexie (thank you) to any compliment or comment thrown my way. I mean what else are you suppose to do?
I am also really excited with the fact that my family is huge on taking pictures, because they were going to take pictures with their cellphones before I pulled my camera out, asking if they wanted to use it instead. After that, they continued to insist that they take pictures of me, so I didn't have to feel like a tourist at all, by randomly pulling out my camera and asking to wait, they stop me and tell me to give them my camera.
For cellphone and internet use, I will be getting both
after I return on my ten day trip, so by the 13th or 14th I should be able to skype any and all, and be able to explore more on my own. Although I was planning on buying my cell, when I asked if we could go somewhere to buy one, my host sister said that they would give me one, even though I kept saying that I would buy one myself, and told them that they didn't need to spend money on me. (So I hope that that answers your quesiton, celina- I don't have a cell.. therefore, no number...)
In 12 hours, I will be getting onto a train.. heading for Chengdu, so while this will be my last post for the next week and a half, I hope all is well back home, love you all- Michelle
