I don't have one word to describe Cambodia, are you kidding me?!?

Beash here! Hello to everyone on the western hemisphere! I feel like it’s been a while since Marcus or I have written so I just wanted to give a quick update. At this moment Marcus and I are sitting in a café in Ha Tien Vietnam and our hands are bloody from killing time. We have eight more hours before our bus leaves to the next city on our journey. Our packs are fully loaded which tends to make walking a bit more of a task, throw in the blazing heat and you have a recipe for disaster. So we are posted up here in a second story café with our lappy, books and constant refills of iced tea.

I have a question for all of you, does it make any sense to order a “crab, tomato soup” and get a bowl of soup with pork, chicken, liver, some strangely gooey orange fish paste and tomatoes? My gut is telling me to get up from this table and go right on back to Cambodia. Every new country we come into is a completely different way of thinking, we have to adjust our actions to their culture, try to learn a whole new language and as of right now we are still trying to figure out why when we crossed the border from Cambodia to Vietnam the smiles started to diminish. It can get a bit overwhelming and like this moment there is a part of me pulling me back to the familiar. Our little hotel room in Kampot, Cambodia was our haven of nothingness where time slipped away for eight days. We spent a day at nearby Kep beach, explored a few cave temples, went to a zoo and Marcus jumped off a bridge. Kampot was dreary at first, but after a bit we warmed up to the sleepy town that seemed as if it was just beginning to rebuild after being destroyed by the Khmer Rouge 30 years ago. We enjoyed biking into town, buying baguettes and friend bananas while catching the all too familiar curious eyes from locals. It was a nice way to close out our time in Cambodia after staying in two congested cities.

We are coming to the point in our travels where we actually have to start planning out the cities we are going to visit next and exactly how many days we

can stay. It was a bit of a bummer to realize that we only have a month to do all of Vietnam, Laos and northern Thailand. We allotted ourselves one month back in Indonesia starting March 1st so until then we have to do our best to manage our time and our money. Right now we are in the Mekong Delta and our next destination is a small town called Can Tho, it is a great central location in the delta surrounded by the best floating markets and beautiful country side ideal for a day of bicycling. I have a good feeling about it. We will spend three or four days there and most likely in that time one of us will write more and have some stories to tell…

We miss you all!

Ps. When I asked Beash to come up with an adjective to describe Cambodia for the title, her response became the title. Absolutely perfect.

From what we saw at the zoo, all of the animals were extremely underfed and starving. These baby lions were trying to eat our water bottle. They were adorable but seeing all the animals like that was so sad.

sad
wow, that's pretty depressing. but i mean, feeding those kids even for a day is better than them going hungry for that day. same with the animals. so sad, but i'm sure there's lots of other stuff you're experiencing that helps keep your spirits up :)
