Her Story:
I had no idea that on Monday, January 18th Pete and I would soon be engaged. We packed our backpacks for our month long trip to Australia & New Zealand then headed to Hong Kong for the afternoon before our flight left Tuesday morning at 9:20am for Sydney.
Pete stated on the Hong Kong metro that he didn’t want to stay at Chungking Mansions that evening that he wanted to start our vacation on a better note. I agreed that I wouldn’t mind finding a nicer place or staying at the Yesinn Hostel, where we stayed for New Year’s Eve. Pete said his friend Alex advised him that hotels had cheaper rooms during the week along the Victoria Harbour.
We first went to the Intercontinental along Avenue of the Stars and Pete came back saying the rooms were out of our price range, but they had another Intercontinental along the harbor also that was in our price range. We hopped in a taxi and off to the Intercontinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong. In less than 5 minutes we arrived at the hotel.
I sat with our bags in the bar area while Pete went to
check the prices of rooms. He came over asking for my passport to check us in since the price was right. I was thinking the whole time “Why are we really spending this much money before a month in Australia and New Zealand?” Pete then came back with a room key saying we could check out the room to see if we liked it.
As we walked to the elevator Pete said we were in room 1140. We got up to the 11th floor and entered the room. It was very nice with a FANTASTIC view of Hong Kong Island. In the room there was a mini bar with chips, water, chocolate, etc waiting to be eaten then charged A HIGH price. I then saw a plate of strawberries and a bottle of champagne chilled on ice. I told Pete “ Don’t touch that it looks expensive”. I then sat down in the chair in front of the window to check out the awesome view of the skyline.
Pete came over to check out the view and kicked my backpack. I asked him “Why are you acting weird you just kicked my bag?” Then I remember Pete dropping
me being creative
my ring is on a strawberry to one knew and saying that he wanted me to be his wife. Tears starting immediately and I couldn’t stop crying, I blanked out on what he said. I remember I responded “ Thank You, oh I mean YES”
I was in complete SHOCK that he planned such a spectacular day without me expecting anything and he bought me a diamond ring, even though it only fit my pinky finger. Pete always said that I wouldn’t get a ring in China since it would put a target on our backs while traveling.
Then Pete said it was all planned that we could eat the strawberries and champagne since he already planned it. He advised me that he Skyped my father and mother a few days earlier and that they already knew it would happen. Pete wanted it to be a surprise since I was expecting a proposal in Australia or New Zealand.
We then went out to find a jeweler to see if we could get my ring sized before flying to Australia, since it just didn’t seem right having the diamond on my pinky finger. We then realized it wasn’t enough time after going to a
few stores to get my ring sized. We went to Tequilla Jacks, Mexican food, for dinner and then went to Outback Steakhouse for dessert. We both laughed at Outback since we were headed to Australia in less than 12 hours.
Pete told me a few days into 2010 that he wanted to marry me this summer and that he would ask for my father’s blessings in Australia. I advised Pete to ask my Dad in the first few days just so in case it didn’t go as planned and he had back up time.
I had been looking at wedding dresses online and we both started planning once Pete told me he wanted to get married this summer while we were home. It was hard to hold this exciting news in from my family and friends.
