Before we left the North Island we completed the best tramp in New Zealand... the Tongoriro Alpine Pass. This trail took us to the base of Ngauruhoe Mountain (AKA Mount Doom). It was a spectacular 19.4 (!) km hike. We hope the pictures entice you to come to NZ soon!

We were lucky - We were lucky -
We were lucky -

On the pass it was quite cool, but no winds to knock us off!
Whew! Whew!
Whew!

Does not look too steep, but we were getting a great work out!

Looks and sounds like an amazing adventure! You've confirmed my belief that New Zealand is a must-do at some point. This year it's Belize though (much better flying time with Kate!). Things here are great. Your house is standing and it's weird to see someone else there. No big news. We're all just enjoying the skiing and lack of shovelling as there hasn't been much snow. Huge thank you to Nancy for the gift - I really hope you return soon so I can redeem it! Looking forward to hearing about more great adventures. Jodie

I just put that title to catch your attention! Awesome photos! I would love to be there too. You guys are definitely making us want to go to NZ. But where is Mr. Bluefrog? I am worried that something has eaten him. Love you guys and miss you...xo Shanny

Best hike ever!
I'm glad you guys made it and had better weather than we did for the hike (flurries going up, but sun going down). Aren't the glacial lakes and red rocks stunning (or, a la Seinfeld, breathtaking).

Thanks to you...
It was your excitement of the hike that made sure we did it. We actually extened our stay in National Park for a day because the weather was not good on the day we planned to hike. Thank goodness we waited. As you know the pictures do not do justice for the beauty of the pass.

Mr. Blue Frog is alive...
The Board does not allow access to our blog so I have to send Mr.BF's pictures over e-mail. You can see his pics when I get home. I think he may be having more fun then us!

Kate will love NZ
Belize is a pretty sweet deal as well! From what we can see (and we have watched closely for all our new moms and dads) NZ is an easy place to travel with kids. It is a great destination! To bad it takes so long to get here! Nothing compared to South Africa I am sure!
