Coaching assessment in progressCoaching assessment in progressCoaching assessment in progress

Friday was Assessment day for most of our prospective coaches.
HOW MANY COACHES CAN YOU FIT IN A COMBI?

At the beginning we thought that we had drawn the short straw because, by Friday, you would all be bored by the coaching points and sessions. However, we managed to secure the best day because today we assessed our ‘students’ and made them COACHES!
Today, eighteen teachers (some of them never played cricket before) run their own coaching sessions and qualified as ICC coaches. We were fortunate to participate in and watch the change from not knowing anything about batting to be able to demonstrate and explain the Pull Shot! How amazing is that?

Violet, aka Miss England, aka Miss Botswana, aka White Stilettos, proved to be brilliant even if a little bit more chatty than we expected…
Our nomination for the star pupil goes to Kgomotso Evelyn Sakong who was just absolutely fantastic. At the end of the assessment she gave us an emotional speech that made even the hardest of us reach for a sleeve.
The overall champagne moment was Anderson explaining the position of a wicket keeper - ‘don’t stand like a kangaroo feeding its young.’

But cricket aside (not sure if I am allowed to

say that - V.) there has been a development in the living quarters. Veronique has got a room mate (no not Mike G who is desperately trying to get away from the snoring Morbster). A cockroach appeared in her room last night and she had to call the security guard to chase it away with a broom. Thank goodness that Group 4 are not armed. We think that it’s still around….

Our driver Godfrey celebrated his 30th birthday today and probably expected a present, but since we had just far too many detours on our way to Mochudi and back, he got only one little doughnut. Not sure how much sugar there was in that - he drove with a brick on the gas pedal. A few spine ‘rejigs’ later we were taken to the Phuthadikobo Museum - the site of the first school in Mochudi built in 1921. All we wanted was a bushy tree to sit under, but Godfrey seems determined to make us more civilized. At least this there was more to it than imaginary footprints and stagnant water.

Now that the first week is drawing to a close, we thought that you should know

One week from knowing zip about cricket coaching to happily organising games and drills amongst themselves. Outstanding !
about our team a bit more:

• Mike Griggs has many roles - tutor, comedian, commentator at the Mini World Cup. Unfortunately he seems to have lost his copy of Bob Monkhouse’s joke book, the jokes are now beginning to come round again.
• Will is team leader (in spite of the attempted coup to depose him). Things are running pretty smoothly, and when they don’t, there are always others to take the blame.
• Miss France (Veronique) is the fashion icon and deputy photographer and has won the mine is bigger than yours competition (lens that is).
• Mark is the chief photographer and IT guru. Apparently he is still up at 1am loading on the blogs, but no one can actually vouch for that.(23:50 tonight as I upload tonight!
• Veronika has gone power mad. Fed up with just managing herself at work, she now has to manage 7 others as hydration officer. She has now promoted herself to water goddess - does that make Mike R a God?
• Alan ‘The meerkat’ was supposed to be administration assistant in charge of stapling bits of paper together, but unfortunately failed miserably. He is a far better first

aid officer - so good that no one has had any injuries yet.
• Tony is the treasurer. He got the position by default and since then has managed to leave the team’s finances lying around here, there and everywhere and has to get Miss France to count out the money for him. There will not be a coup for his position.
• Mike R has no official standing in the party and that is the way he likes it.

Now back at the Gaborone Oval watching Pakistan against India. More on that later.

Mike and Veronika

PS. The answer is 14 (up from 8 a week ago)
