Lawn Hill National Park

What can I say, I love this place. Never again do I want to go back into civilisation. Yes it's hot and dry and dusty.... but only a 2 minute walk from your campsite and you are by the river, the temperature drops by 5 degrees and you feel like you are in a true desert oasis (and you really are I guess). For miles around there is not a drop of water, no greenery, just sand and rock, then you come to the magical emerald waters of the Lawn Hill Creek.

The Lawn Hill Gorge is formed by the Lawn Hill Creek which is fed by numerous freshwater springs from the limestone plateau to the west. It is truly a visual delight! I could swim all day in the creek (and I do). This is what I have been looking for. A place to put my feet up, read a book, swim, do some walks, and relax. And that's exactly what I have been doing.

I got into a good book, the people in the campground have been fanastic and I have met alot of wonderful

people. Everyone is friendly. One family gave me a plate of dinner one night and a massive Captain Morgans and coke! It has been nice.

I hired a canoe and paddled up the creek to Indarri Falls. It is just amazing paddling up through the Gorge. You can hear the wind funnelling through, it sounds abit eerie. Indarri Falls are great. There is a natural spa bath from the falls and it's fun to sit in there and get a massage. There are freshwater crocs in here, but I dont' see any and i try not to think about them either! Anyway there are so many fish for them to be kept busy with! The Archerfish are kinda cool. They shoot a jet of water up to knock down insects on the surface of the water. For some reason, they seemed to think my toes are insects and I kept getting hit with jets of water making me jump each time.

The bird life is pretty amazing here too. I was really excited to spot the Purple crowned fairy wren by the river one afternoon. They are quite rare so spotting one was a highlight. The creek is

lined with pandanus palms and there are lots of birds to spot amongst them.

The other highlight has been the 'ta ta lizards'. These guys are my absoluate favourite! They run and when they stop their little front arm goes up and waves. EVERYTIME THEY STOP! It doesn't matter if they run 5 metres or 60 cms, when they stop, they wave. And it is just the cutest little wave you will ever see. I found myself one day watching them for almost an hour. I am trying to solve the puzzle, as no one knows why they do this. It's not because the ground is too hot because they do it on shady ground, it could be a communication thing, a warning to predators, or just a twitch! Hey we all have our little quirks don't we?

Each day I wake up saying I will pack up and go now, but then I have a swim and start reading and well... I will leave tomorrow.... That is what I said for 4 days. But when you don't have a time frame, no place you have to be, a full fridge and food containers, four litres of red

wine, only $5 a night to camp, then it's easy to stay put.

After almost a week of enjoying the beautiful surrounds of Lawn Hill NP I did eventually decide to push off. I had finished my book and was refreshed to hit the road again. I headed south through Riversleigh ( a world hertiage listed site for fossils) and continued down the bumpy, dusty, road to Camooweal. I had my first creek crossing at the Gregory River. I must say I was glad to get onto a main road. The whole van was covered in dust, inside and out. Everything had dust on it, myself included.

Next stop, the Northern Territory.
