Arc du Triumphe
Built with American purchased cement... it was meant to be a airstrip :) I find it sad that America dropped over 2 million tons of bombs on this beautiful country in a decade... Laos is easily overshadowed by Thailand and Vietnam but there is so much natural beauty to be seen in this country. I only get to pass through a few cities but it will definitely be on my list of places to return to.
Vientiane is a quiet capital city on the other side of the Mekong River via the Friendship bridge that links Laos to Thailand. I only spent a few days in total in Vientiane, I linked back up with the Germans and headed up to Vang Viang for a few days. So for the most part my time in the capital was spent getting my Vietnamese visa, watching sunset on the Mekong, wandering around, and of course eating.
It has been pretty easy to meet people and get tips on things since you can spot a backpacker pretty easily in comparison to the locals. I enjoyed the Mixay Guesthouse and stayed there on both occasions that I was in town, I was given the same room both times. I am about half a block from the river,
which is an amazing thing to see.
I just heard that the typhoon that hit the Philippines is now over Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia... this should make for an interesting few weeks. The internet is significantly slower, or maybe it's just my netbook, so we shall see as time progresses.
