We're now in Cuenca, where the architecture is amazing! As far as the cities go, this is definately my favourite in Ecuador. It is so pretty, for a city anyway! You can really see the Spanish influence here. The buildings are so intricate and all have quant little balconies overlooking the fairly narrow streets. We've only got two nights here, so we havn't seen a great deal but today we took a trip to the nearby villages of Gualaceo and Chordeleg where we visited the infamous markets. The fruit market was like my dream come true. I sampled at least my bodyweight in fruit!

The thing that stood out the most to me here though is the way the women are dressed. Cuenca is where the panama hat industry is based in Ecuador, so I've heard and you really can tell as virtually every traditional woman is wearing one, along with their velvet 50s style full skirts and lace cardigans. There really is a distinct traditional dress here. To top it off, most of them are about 5 foot tall, so they look like little cute dolls running around selling and buying masses of produce from their cute baskets.

We managed to sneakily get some photos of them whilst they weren't looking, as most would be offended if they knew you were trying to take a photo of them here. Other than that we pretty much just sat in the central square in Cuenca, being in awe of the beautiful architecture and sampling the local foods that they sell on the streets, including grilled plaintain which was amazing!

We're off again tomorrow for another4 hours of bus rides on our way to Vilcabamba which I really cannot wait for as we'll be staying in another eco-lodge immersed into nature.... heaven! 😊

Church in Gualaceo

nombre de la iglesia
Does anyone know the name of this church? Who is it named for and/or who is it's patron saint? Thanks. ¿Hay alguien que sabe el nombre de esta iglesia en Gualaceo? ¿Quien es su santo patrón o para que fiesta eclesiástica es nombrado. Gracias de antemano.
