First night in KK
This was from the posh hotel - before we downgraded Its been a long break between entries again - but no excuses...Mike was here the other week and I wasted no time getting him out to the pub quiz where I was sure he could help improve our team's dismal record. We came in dead last the day he arrived...but Mike redeemed himself the following week when our second to last place finish got us a free pitcher of Stella - compliments of the first place team (who felt sorry for us - naturally).
I managed to take 1 day off work while he was here, so we headed for Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia (Borneo, Sawah...so many names I just can't make heads or tails of it). I had the idea that we could go check out the orangutan's at long last but once again my planning skills failed me...so we basically spent the days at poolside reading and laying about. The posh hotel we spent the first two nights at was very nice but too quiet - well with the exception of the one nightclub - a scary place called 'Jugs' which was full of locals who couldn't possibly have been paying the outlandish prices we paid for 1 beer...it
was loud and seedy so it was an early night option for us. The next morning the sunshine greeted us warmly and we went down for a 4 start breakfast of fried noodles, potatoes, beef bacon, fried rice...god they do manage to screw up breakfast outside of the US...I'll never get used to it. We spent the day poolside, relaxing - tough life. KK doen't have the most spectacular beaches i've ever seen, but the boardwalk in the city centre was full of good, cheap restaurants and pubs - and had a great atmosphere. It was a welcome change from 'Jugs' and we enjoyed it as you would expect. The following day we had to switch hotels (another bit of poor planning on my part, but a blessing in disguise as it gave us a chance to see a totally different kind of resort - more rustic and with a huge 5K beach! Nice 😊 This place was well out of town so we had another well deserved quiet night before heading back to Singapore the following day.
I spent the next week working (system test was that week) and so Mike was left to entertain himself during the
days - he's definitely done more tourist stuff than I have here! Eventually, though, we met up with another of his mate's from London, Scott. He's just in the process of moving here and his wife wasn't yet in the country so we had a good BBQ rib dinner, some wine and then a bit of dancing...you just can't go wrong with a bit of dancing!
Soon Mike was off on his journeys and I was back at the office. Its now past the half way point of this project and the pace is quickening. While there are definitely more than a few moments when I've wanted to throw in th towel, I'm starting to plan a 'proper' trip for when the project ends in October. Carla (and guest) will be coming through Singapore next week (expect another party blog following that one) and then my Mom and her friend Rose will be coming at the end of September...I'm so happy to be getting guests on their holidays coming through and can't wait for a month or so of holiday myself!
An entry wouldn't be complete without reference to the weather - its 29 degrees celsius again today
(85 for those of you in the states) and as usual, despite the weatherman predicting rain every day, its sunny. The poolside beckons and I've a book to ready!
Till next time, I remain in exotic Singapore!
