Sichuan 四川 Tibet 西藏
Sichuan Province 四川: Chengdu-Peng Zhou-JiuZhaiGou-Le Shan-Emei Shan Tibet 西藏: Lhasa-Gyantse-Shigatse We spent two weeks in a summer camp teaching program, organized by Jilin University students, near the earthquake region in Sichuan Province. The place is called Pengzhou, it is two hours driving from Chengdu (capital of Sichuan). Chengdu City. We visited The Panda Research Centre, The Provincial Museum and some monasteries. Chengdu-JiuZhai Gou (National Park)
14hrs by bus, on a very dangerous road, passing the epicenter of the Earthquake. The most beautiful place in Sichuan, it is a natural reserve in an alpine Valley. Till now, the most beautiful park that I have seen in China. Le Shan: 2hrs by bus from Chengdu Grand Buddha. Most popular place for Chinese Tourists. We enter the Park but we had to queue during 4hrs just to be able to see it. We decided not to see it!!! Emei Shan: 2hrs by bus from Chengdu. This mountain is one of the Middle Kingdom’s 4 famous Buddhist Mountains. We slept in one Buddhist Monastery. They provide accommodation for hikers… Lhasa-Chengdu by train. 43hrs, hard SEAT!!! We had a long trip due to the mountains. The railway has been constructed on the QinHai-Tibet Plateau: Chengdu-Lanzhou-Xining-Golmud-Lhasa . Total 3360KM… Nice anthropological experience!!! When we passed the 4.000 meters people started to feel dizzy, sick, due to “Soroche”, “mal de altura”. Nice landscape, few people mainly nomads, yaks…
Lhasa. It is a small City, only 200.000 inhabitants and quite new. The PotalaPalace is the centre of the capital. Tourists are allowed only one hour tour visit. Impressive construction (XVII s.) on a rock and the amount of gold and jewelries… The landscape in East Tibet is very similar to Central Andes. People are nomads, living a primitive and simple life. Religion is present in everyday life. Mongolian and Tibetan ways of life and religion are similar as a legacy of the Yuan Dynasty… Lhasa-Beijing by train, 47hr, tourist train!!! We got hard bed, but a FANTASTIC TRAIN, even provided with Oxygen!!!
