So we have a ten day "field trip" that starts today (officially tomorrow) where we the students are supposed to choose some place to go (preferably outside of Tianjin) to "study" some aspect of Chinese culture.

I am traveling in a group of four people. We were originally planning on going to Sichuan, but the train tickets leaving from both Tianjin and Beijing to Chengdu on the dates we wanted to leave were sold out. Change of plan - now we're going to the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, not to be confused with the country of Mongolia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_Mongolia

I'm going to be perfectly honest - I'm not exactly sure what we're going to do there... I don't really know anything about Inner Mongolia, but I think it's best known for it's sprawling grass lands.... I think there's some sand dunes there too... Every one tells me that Inner Mongolia is so nice because there's a lot of nature there, and you can ride horses, but there's a lot of nature in America, and I can ride horses in America too, but I still get bored if I stay out in country areas too long. I really don't know what to expect to be honest. It could be either a really fun back packing experience, or it could be ten days too long. I'm gonna keep an open mind, but if I get bored, I might come back to Tianjin early. Luckily, the Naadam festival will be going on while we're there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naadam

For the record, I'm not the one who chose to go to Inner Mongolia. My room mate just came home from buying tickets at the train station one night, and said, "You're either going to love this, or you're going to hate me... but we're going to Inner Mongolia."

Alright - let's do it!

I'll update you from Inner Mongolia!

have a fun trip
17th July 2009

I know this is random as you have no idea who I am but welcome to Inner Mongolia. I've been living here for two months and will be here to November and I felt the same way. But it's fun. And there is more to do than the grasslands. Life up here is a little slower and more casual. If you have any questions feel free to message me. Once again, I realize how random this is. Enjoy the Nadaam! It should be quite a spectacle.
