Drinking in the "tienda"
Before the big night out. I´m Back Y´all
So you´ve probably been asking yourselves.... How does my hair look? Does he/she like me for me, or only my stunning good looks? Can it really be, has Chris Penn left us for good? Were thirty-six roses enough, or should I have gone for fifty? Well allow me to give you a short respite from your everyday problems, with another entry from my travels which are ironically becoming increasingly domestic.
About twelve days ago now I was starting to plan my exit from Quito when the unexpected happened. I met a girl. Her name is Vanessa and she has swept me off my feet in that kind of unreal romantic/comedy way, so surely much drama will follow. She is a medical student here and dropped by my Spanish school to use the computer there, she teaches there in her breaks from school. We were introduced by my teacher, and right away my concentration level dropped significantly. Although she told me that she had important studies to do I kept right on talking to her untill she agreed to go out to the disco the next night.
The next night I had already made plans with
Me and Vanessa
Can´t keep her eyes off me!!! some friends from my hostal and with my friend Milton from the corner store to go out in the Mariscal district were all the clubs were. Now I had a date and the scene was set for a great evening. Most of the pictures here are from that night. After recieving differing information from various people on how to treat a Latin lady we were off to the Disco. Once the music was pumping and we were on the dance floor, one thing became clear right away. She doesn´t dance like your average med student, more like Shakira.... DAMN!!! Although I was a little overmatched in the hip shaking department, after a few quick cocktails I was at least keeping up. Anyways after turning on the patented Weslak charm I was able to win her over. The club was packed and to the relief of all around 1am the bartenders started passing around huge bowls of Sex on The Beach, accopmanied by numerous straws. The bowls were passed around like crowd surfing hippies at a Phish concert and the whole room was soon very happy. Finally around three in the morning we filtered out into the streets, where we indulged
Xavier and Tatiana
Xavier, who along with the rest of his family runs my Hostal, and his wife Tatiana. in street meat.... almost made me feel like I was back in Toronto!!! Anyways a great night was had by all, easily the best for me so far!!
The last week, I´ve been spending lots of time with Vanessa and having a blast. I´ve met her whole family, and everything, things are getting kinda scary! Although I will have to leave here sooner than later as I still plan on seeing the numerous sights that South America has to offer, I plan to come back to Quito around June. I have been offered a job at my Hostal to run the bar that they are currently constructing on the rooftop terrace. The high season here is from June-Sept. I´ve got so many friends here now that it feels like home, so I think it will be a blast coming back, and of course it will be fun to be back behind the bar. I haven´t yet discussed my exit with Vanessa though(eeek), so I´m a little nervous about that, but think everything should be fine.
Carnival!!
All of February is the Month of Carnival here in South America. Of course the most famous celebrations take place in
Working it!!!
Nothing like a good kiss after street meat!! Rio Di Janiero, but the whole contenent celebrates the Carnival in a different way. Here in Ecuador the whole country is turned into a big water fight. This is good fun to watch, unless you happen to get caught in the cross fire. It is quite normal to have a bucketful of water dumped on your head from a balcony at any given time, and it is all in good fun. Also water ballons are thrown regularily, most missing the target though, good thing these kids don´t grow up playing baseball!! I have so far managed to escape with only one good soaking, through using much caution and keeping my eyes on the balconies. This will surely change next week though, as Monday through Wednsday are the most intense days of the Month and nobody is spared. I have bought a water gun already and any girl in a white shirt had better watch out!!
Futbol
As you all know I am a die-hard fan of the "beautiful game", but despite all of my pasion, my playing experiance is limited mostly to English´s fusball table. On this past Sunday, me and some friends from my neighbourhood went to
The Whole Gang
Post hot dog picture. one of the big parks here in Quito to play a pickup game. Although fighting of the fact that I´m not exactly used to running around in the high altitude, I was actually pretty decent. My footwork can definetely use some practice, but my tackling was excellent, and I was congratulated by my teammates for my display, they had some doubts that a hockey playing Gringo could cut it. At one point though I was asked by the other team to stop tackling so hard, they weren´t hockey players and weren´t used to the kind of abuse I was handing out. I told them in my best Spanish that "if they wanted to play like boys there is another game over there" and pointed to a game being played by some 10 year-olds across the way. Their machismo then kicked in and the rest of the game was a little heated.... just the way I like it!! Good fun even if I was quite sore the next day.
Other than that don´t know what to say. I´ve been hanging out with my friend Patricio, who is a law student here (Really doing the intellectual curcuit here). He is real
good lad who is 23 married with a kid, but still finds time to have a good time, and seems remarkably unstressed for a person in his situation. Been sleeping in lots (some things never change) and working on the tan, which is quite dangerous here as we are on the Equator and have caught a few sunburns in the process. Also visited the Basilica here which is a little scary and has typically shaky South American ladders at the highest points and gaping holes at the highest points which were a bit unnerving. Most of the pictures of the city were taken from there.
Don´t have much more to say for now, except that I hope all is well back in Toronto, and any gossip/stories would be gladly accepted. Keep posting commoents please it´s so nice to hear from all of you. Untill next time all the best, and keep on rocking in the free world!!
Morgan.
