I arrived in Vientaine from Luang Prabang after a 6 hour bus ride turned into a 10 hour bus ride due to a couple of flat tires suffered along the way. It was a really lovely drive though ... I would have to rate Laos as one of the most beautiful countries in the world when it comes to raw, undeveloped, natural beauty. Unfortunately, Vientaine doesn't possess much of this beauty. It was generally a bleak industrial city, but it served its purpose with ample travel agents provided visa and travel service to Vietnam. Unfortunately, I forgot to sign something and had to start the 3 day visa processing start from scratch, so I was in Vientaine a day or two longer than I would have wanted. Luckily it had a few tourist attractions (a national monument) within walking distance, paperback bookstores and enough great local food to keep me preoccupied until I ventured forth to Vietnam.

thinking...
I am an American from Hollywood California Living in China (Wukang, near Hangzhou). I am contemplating a trip to Yunnan Province and then off to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. I have not ventured into these areas yet, but the fascination bug has bitten (hopefully not harboring any sort of tropical disease). I was wondering if you had taken any type of boat excursions on your trip thus far. I am thinking of catching a boat from Yunnan Province China to Luang Prabang and then to Vientiane. Did you consider a boat in lieu of the bus? Any information would be so kindly appreciated (hotels, travel hints and so on). If you are thinking of coming to China you can stay at our place here (a very special small city at the foot of some very well known mountains). I am semi retired and ready to explore the world as I did when I was a younger man (53 and going strong). Steve Galerkin
