We have finished our horrible contracts with our school in Korea and we are free!!! Our first stop on our long, long trip is the Philippines. So far so good here, it is beautiful, well at least the beach. From what we can tell the Philippines is a poorer country than Korea. Our first stop was Manila which was just a layover, 1 day. We flew to Manila and stayed in a closet that they told us was our room. I guess in Manila all you need is a bed because that is all we had. I (josh) was a little angry at first because I am used to an actual hotel room but it turned out to be just fine. We are traveling for a while and we are on a fairly tight budget so we will have to stay in some very small and hot rooms.
After leaving Manila we flew to Boracay. This is a beautiful island with a huge white sand beach, and we both agree that is one of the most amazing beaches we have ever visited. We stayed in a bungalow that was about a five minute walk from the beach. It was a bamboo bungalow that had a great deck with a hammock. Boracay is a beautiful place and since we have been working very hard for the past year we decided to be very, very lazy for those five days. Our schedule consisted of eating, swimming, reading, sleeping. Needles to say we got some bad sunburns the first few days there, but after we got out of the sun we were fine. Boracay had some awesome restaurants all of which were right on the beach and had sand floors. There is nothing like a sunset on a beach with an ice cold cocktail! There was defiantly a huge contrast between the people in Boracay and Manila. Manila was kind of scary, the people are very poor and many of them ask for money constantly. In Boracay the people are all beach bums, they actually ask you if you want to snorkel or take a boat ride while they are lying in a hammock, very different.
After Boracay was a brief stop in Cebu. We stayed in Cebu city for two days to get out of the heat, we got to stay in a room with air conditioning and a TV! For two days we just sat in our cool room and made an ocasional walk to the grocery store. In Cebu there are plenty of sites. This is where we saw Magellan's cross and the Fort and some old houses. We did a small walking tour in Cebu then it was off to Bohol.
Bohol is an island and they call it the mini Boracay. We are staying on Alona beach on the island of Panglao. Our first days here the weather was bad and the beach looked pretty dirty. Now that the weather has settled a bit the water has cleared up. I guess that the condition of the beach was not a huge concern because we have been swimming in the swimming pool at our resort. So far so good traveling in a little different than having a set home but traveling affords us the luxury of being very lazy. We took a half day tour around Bohol to see some of the sites. We saw the Chocolate Hills, they are large hills made by coral deposits. There are over 1,200 hills on this island. One of the other highlights of our tour was the tarsier, it’s a small monkey. We got some good pictures of that and got to feed it some crickets. For our lunch we took a riverboat cruise that was also a buffet. I think that the cruise was the coolest part of the day because on the way back we docked on the river with a small floating stage where about 50 people sang and danced for us for about ten minutes. One country down many more to go, thanks for looking at our blogs.
