Theft on overnight buses

After a relaxing day in Merida, sleeping in and swimming in the sister hotel's pool, we jumped aboard an overnight bus to San Cristobal de Las Casas, which was a town on route for us to catch another bus to Oaxaca, our next official destination. We had read the warnings about theft on overnight buses and so carefully put our backpacks at our feet under our seats, thinking that that was the safest place to put them if we nod off for a while. We had heard that the bus to Palenque, a near by tourist destination, always had reports of theft, but our bus didn't stop there and so we assumed that the threat was slightly less. But little did we know, that our companion sitting behind us carefully opened Dan's bag from behind the seat and stole our camera, mobile phone and external hard disk drive. Sneaky bugger!

We only realised this of course once we had gotten off the bus and had unloaded our bags at a hostel that we were to store the bags at whilst we waited to catch the next bus out of town in the evening. No surprise what we spent most of our day doing... We visited the local cop shop and waited ages to be served before it took a couple of hours for our statement to be taken, identification to be checked and a 7 page report to be printed. It appears that when a report is made, every legal clause that relates to the occurance is mentioned in the report making the document extremely long. No one at the police station could speak English, so we had to soldier-on with our Spanish and tiredness from our long journey and make sure that everything was completed as required. Hope our insurance company is happy with our efforts.

We had just enough time to buy some tomales (corn mash boiled inside the cork husk with meat) from a street vendor and some soft tacos from a small store, before we sent off emails to the insurance company, banks and phone company before getting back on another overnight bus to Oaxaca. Dan locked his bag this time...

Goodness!
Yep. That's the one thing about travel that I don't care for, the extra caution you have to take with your stuff. Sorry to hear what happened... hope the HD wasn't too much of a loss. Grrrr! See you in Costa Rica!
