ADELAIDE
Just like Bicester - Pig Street, not Sheep Street. Hi folks. we have been in Adelaide for nearly a week now and we are, surprise, surprise, having a wonderful time. Just to get the Adelaide jokes out of the way; we arrived on 'Adelaide' flight; and 'Adelaide' odds against that happenning! Sorry.
We spent the first couple of days getting our bearings - not too difficult in this wonderful city which is very compact and built on the American block system - and also looking for better, cheaper accommodation. This we did, finding a motel that reduced their rates to twenty quid a night when we asked for a discount if we stayed for seven days.
We went to the beautiful beach suburb of Glenelg on Wednesday. We liked it so much we found yet another motel and booked in for the following week for even less than our current motel.
The first thing we saw when we walked along the pier at Glenelg was a dolphin swimming about 20 yards offshore. Off course we felt the need to see what the local public houses had to offer and we have to say that they did not disappoint. In fact it would be safe to say we

Sunset on Glenelg got pretty happy. The only problem being that every pub seems to have a different definition of glass sizes. A big or small glass can differ or be the same as a schooner or a pint - of course if you want an imperial pint that's a different size again. Hey, it's all beer.
Thursday evening saw us going to a typically Aussie pub where we listened to a very good singer doing mostly new country songs. The most surprising thing was seeing loads of young Aussies singing along to these country songs; I suspect they would be laughed out of town in the UK. Given that the vodkas were 1 Pound 20 a shot, you will forgive us for staying there until half past silly in the morning. Fair play to the singer he did accede to a request from Ken to do The Proclaimers' 500 miles, which had the whole pub up dancing and singing along. A good night.
The highlight so far was getting tickets for the first one day cricket final between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Adelaide Oval. (A ten minute walk from our motel.) A wonderful cricket venue, wonderful sunshine, a

Saturday saw us going back to Glenelg as we had received word that a couple of Irish friends that we had met in Thailand (Chris and Ruth-Anne) were staying there for a few days. More by good luck than good judgement we bumped in to them at 3 o'clock outside a pub spookily called The Dublin.
What are you gonna do? Well we needed somewhere to sit and catch up. A few beers and a bottle of wine later we all headed back to Adelaide centre to meet other friends of Chris and Ruth-Anne - who just happenned to be in a pub, honest. A good night was had by all - more beer, and a few more bottles of wine will explain the late morning that we enjoyed.
As we said we are now going to be here until the 22nd Feb when we head towards Melbourne. On Monday we are off on a trip to The

The biggest rocking horse in the world. Don't fancy cleaning up after this one. Barrossa Valley, where they make some sort of alcoholic drink, apparently. We will enjoy the scenery no doubt and if they ask us to sample their product well, what are you gonna do?
Just seen that Dunfrmline had an emphatic 1-0 victory over Livingstone yesterday, so I think that's a cause for some celebration. We are joining our friends later on this avo for our first Aussie barbie.
UPDATE
Have been on the wine trip. Four vineyards. Ten, yes 10, wines tasted at each one. The trip also included a visit to a toy making centre which housed the biggest rocking horse in the world and a reservoir, the wall of which had strange acoustics which allowed you to talk naturally to people on the other side of the reservoir some 150 metres away. Perhaps Colin can come up with some scientific explanation.
Our day ended meeting up with Chris and Ruth-Anne for a free steak at our now local pub - The Stag.
Trust you are all well and as always it would be great to hear from you via the comments box.
