After leaving Plitvice we drove essentially the entire length of Croatia heading south towards Korcula. We took a small ferry and landed on the island, which is about 2 hours from Dubrovnik. Being on a ferry felt like home. Minor difficulties in finding the place including thoughts of potential housing scam, but details aside we found our lovely terrace apartment overlooking the water. the next morning my friend Kari who has been studying down in the south of France joined us for the rest of our Croatian vacation. The island of Korkula is covered in green with only three cities total. Our first official night, we went out to a restaurant which claims to be Marco Polo's favorite restaurant. Croatian food is mainly Italian influenced with some hearty meats and tasty fresh fish. With the exchange rate in our favor, it was nice to eat be able to eat at restaurants occasionally as well as cook our own food.
The next day we rented bikes and rode through vineyards. We stopped at one for a tasting, made it past the donkey security guard, and we treated to a personal tasting. Our host's family had been living on the island for the past 500 years. The tasting began with two whites, then two reds, then the fruit and herb brandy's. We took some wine with us for the ride and had some that night with a dinner prepared by Kel, Kari and I. Each afternoon on Korcula we stopped for gelato. There were perfect swimming spots as well but the weather didn't permit. Because of the weather, one morning we sat and drank coffee and tea and played cards in a waterfront cafe for nearly two hours.
Then it was off to Dubrovnik. Kari and I hopped on a bus because fitting the 5 of us and luggage in our Citroen was out of the question. We stayed in a house about 45 outside of the city, a beautiful and quiet spot along the coast. Unfortunately they just happened to be putting a road in above the house so we had construction alarms each morning at 7:30, and the noise didn't stop until 4. It forced us to get out and explore Cavtat and Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is an old, walled city. We did a tour of the ramparts, which gave a beautiful view of the inside of the city as well as the entire coastline. Besides being locked in a tower by Kellen we had a great time.
Cavtat was a small town in between Dubrovnik and our house where we spent afternoons walking along the water and ate dinner one night. We also rented two scooters as well and drove them up to a beautiful viewpoint of the coast.
This was a special trip for our family. We haven't been able to travel together for a long time and doing so in a outdoorsy and beautiful country was the perfect fit. It was fun to be able to share it with Kari as well. I'll never forget this trip or running out of gas and my Dad being picked up by a large Croatian woman, wondering if we'd ever see him again 😊
Miss you Mom, Dad, Kel, see you in 3 weeks!

-After this trip Kari and I took a boat over to Italy and then a train to Cinque Terre. More to come on the next blog!
