We are not hikers, both because we are not in particularly great shape and because we have two small boys. In general, that’s fine. However, some national parks are designed mostly for hikers. Take Guadalupe Mountains National Park, for example. The highway skirts the southeast edge. I was initially tempted to have us walk along a few paths, but we’re ready to leave the southwest, so we stopped at a few places for photos and called it good.

I had also planned to have us spend an evening in El Paso to go to a few local museums and probably the zoo, but it’s a little close to Mexico right now. We did need to cross off Chamizal National Memorial, though, so we drove Hwy 62/180 into town, stayed 20 minutes at the park (long enough to Jeff to take some photos) and then I-10 to Fort Stanton. (Yes, that’s an awful lot of driving for a few photos. Call us crazy.)

This morning we did Big Bend National Park. Again, we weren’t hiking. It was high 90s and sunny, but hazy enough for bad pictures. We saw many, many turkey vultures sunning themselves and soaring above. We saw some quick little lizards and a couple rabbits, but not much else. I was astounded by how little water is in the Rio Grande. Perhaps the orchards northwest of there, in New Mexico and Texas, were not the most appropriate use of water!

On our way home, we stopped at Fort Davis National Historic Site. It might have been 100o, so we stayed long enough for Liam and me to walk the loop (while Cole made a big mess for Jeff).

And now we’re out of Texas. We decided to stop at Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City for a break on the way home. Assuming we make it home without any incidents (did I mention the growling noise the car now makes?), this was a lovely vacation. The boys did great, which is reassuring for the next one.
