After walking up the mountain we took this picture from our first stop.
What a busy day!
We left the hotel after saying good bye to Goldy and Lidja, our new Slovenian friends, and decided to have a look at the other monasteries by road. The views of the various sites are really exceptional, so we spent a few hours there and manged to harvest some nice pictures.

We were then ready for a 4 hour drive to Athens. Driving towards Athens was very easy and we were glad we were not on the other side of the road. It was extremely busy in the other direction. It was a bank holiday in Greece also. Without much plan we ended up choosing the right day to visit Meteora, just before the bank holiday
.
We stopped for lunch in Karditsas, one hour and a quarter from Meteora. The restaurant we found was both huge and empty. The owners, reassured us they were open and could prepare a meal for us. It was exceptional.
We ended up having a home cooked family meal, sitting in front of the fireplace with the owners sitting at a table nearby keeping us company and we managed to learn a couple of words in Greek.. We spoke a

lot although we don't speak Greek and they don't speak English. I have no ideas how we managed, but I remember very well that the coffee we drunk was called Nescafe in Greek!

We arrived late in Athens and needed to, well yes again have some food. So we went for dinner in the touristic street, facing the Agora. (The rue au beure in Brussels in a pale comparison). It is one restaurant after another, packed with a mix of locals and tourists all sitting outside. In the same restaurant as ours there was a group of locals having wine, singing and laughing. One of them said something very nasty to a middle aged Greek woman passing by. She was not happy and as she let him know, the guy stood up and attacked her in front of all the crowd. A waiter tried to calm him down, she called the police and we ended up giving our details to the police as we volunteered to be witnesses.

After the unpleasant experience at dinner we did a quick tour of the region of the Acropolis by night. It is impressive.

I´ve been to Meteora!!!
Oh my God... It was in 1996... I went to Greece and Egypt during my 30 days of holidays. At that time I was able to take holidays... I organized to spend one week with a italian cousin that got married with a greek and was living at Larissa, a city in the middle of the country. And when Sunday arrived, all the family (they have three children; now in the 20´s) brings me to know this fantastic place. I became really impressed with Meteora, his history, his unique beauty. I remember very well some moments (not necessarily specials) from that day, just because the day was special. But one image remain so strong in my mind -- the blue sky. A kind of a base for a kind of a picture for that strange forms of mountains that are able to hold in each one one monastery... Well, now I would like to say something about that week that I spent with my cousin´s family in Greece, but that nothing has been with Meteora. The children of my cousin -- in that time between 6 to 10 years old) were so kind with me. They speek greek, of course, and italian -- in Italy live the biggest part of my cousin Carmela´s family. Two or three weeks before I arrived the three started to speek only italian to improve the language to talk with "that" Brazilian cousin that they didn´t understand how come was living from so far away. Look so kind: before know me, they decided, and they were only children, they WANTED to keep in touch with me. It was a lovely and unforgettable week in my life. A gift of all Gods of Greece.
