Buenas tardes de Buenos Aires!

Reading through my paper-and-pen, good old fashioned travel diary I noticed that one year ago when I set off for Europe my first entry called that my greatest adventure to date. Now, as I am about to spend my first night in South America at the beginning of a four month backpacking trip I am tempted to break out the superlatives once more. This is certainly a great adventure and this journey through some amazing parts of the world will be unforgettable, no doubt.

After leaving Fredericton in a less than satisfactory fashion (Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help!) I had good flights here through Pearson and via Santiago, Chile before reaching Buenos Aires. I was taken care of, given vegetarian meals and my last Molson Canadian beers for a while, I suspect. I didn´t have a neighbour so I did get some sleep and hopefully did not contract swine flu. My luggage even made it with me, which is pretty unusual in my travel record! Soaring high above the Andes mountains was breathtaking and I snapped a couple of photos of the peaks and valleys.

Buenos Aires is wamer than I thought it would be - 25 degrees this evening - and quite the city. My hostel is excellent and I´ve met some people who seem very welcoming. It´s good to be back in this nomadic lifestyle. I explored a bit earlier and will give more on my impressions of this city another time. Tonight I am heading to bed early and getting up for a jaunt over to the Brazilian consulate to try to obtain a visa. Another little adventure on a trip of many.

I´ll try to keep this blog updated fairly regularly. I miss my friends and family loads and would really love to hear from you so please send me e-mails! Word from my ¨homes¨ makes my day when I´m far away! For now I´m safe and sound and excited to get this adventure underway.

This opens during the day when light hits it and curls itself up at night. Puts the flowers at the Victoria airport to shame.

Flags are just better here - although, the B.C. flag also has a sun on it I suppose.

Be our eyes on another continent
Emmy, you just make me jealous. But then through you, I can see and do some of the things I wanted to do when I was 20. I am torn between the vicarious experiences, and being a surrogate parent who worries about unexpected dangers. Be open, but wily--wary of those that might not be as well intentioned as you. Keep your freshness. I am so happy that we Canadians and we in BC have you as our face in Latin America. ENJOY. Mary Jo

Hola
What an adventure! I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences. Life in the valley is pretty uneventful but the camus is blooming and the meadows are a carpet of blue, yellow and green. Spring has sprung. Take care, Annette

Hola Aunt Mary Jo! I am definitely staying wary, always careful and all that. I'm lucky so far, hoping to stay that way... at the same time, nothing I brought is irreplaceable except perhaps the beautiful photos I'm taking that I will have to show you when I get a chance!

Hey Reid, I am definitely taking good care of myself and being safe and cautious but also having amazing adventures. I have to do it now when I'm not working, eh? And age is not real - don't you know? It's just made up so I might be young but I manage pretty well - knock on wood. See you sometime, somewhere, in this small world of ours!

the envy of all
Hi darling Emmy, you are so great to venture forth. Keep your eyes very open, don't miss a thing and try to keep an open mind. We tend to think or compare 'other' places to our own and there are many surprises out there. It's the people, always, the people. We are all travelling with you, Have a super day to-day and then there's always, to-morrow. sending love and hugs Aj

Thanks for the good wishes, Auntie Josie! I hope all is well in your neck of the woods with you and yours. Everything you said in your comment was absolutely right - I am just trying to keep experiencing as much as I can.
