Today marks a week in Mexico. Quick impressions - Beautiful and varied geography, friendly people that almost always return a greeting with a smile. Great weather ( so far ). Amazing variations in the towns and villages - some are remarkably clean and seem proud of themselves, some are very squalid and dirty, most are some of both. There seems to be many buildings that have been started, then left unfinished. Everywhere - in towns, villages and even just along the roads there are unfinished houses and shops, apartments, and even hotels. I'm not sure why this is so - possibly that construction loans are not available (or desired?) and the building proceeds at the pace of available money? Food is inexpensive. Gas is a touch more about $3.50 a gallon for the good stuff.
Today was another mostly lazy day. We did wander through La Pesca again, and then rode to Soto la Marina, which is a bit larger and more inland, to find the ATM. When we pulled into the bank parking lot, there were soldiers stationed all around the square and along the street. We have no idea why, maybe just to be a presence for a while. The money machine wasn't working, so Deb went in search of another, following the directions of a shopkeeper nearby. A soldier greeted her around the corner, and tried to chat her up... even asked for her phone number ! After getting some money, we both had shoe-shines on the Plaza. The gentleman doing the shining spoke even less English than I did Spanish, but we managed to have the longest and most interesting conversation I've had so far in broken Spanish/English ! His son came by during the school break and tried a little conversation too. Very likable guys. We did a little window shopping, then headed back to La Pesca. Once back in town, we went for a swim, then for a walk along the main street, and while buying a taco pilata at a sidewalk stand, up pulls a pick-up truck full of soldiers. Guess who comes over to shake our hands? The same guy that tried to pick up Deb in Soto de Marina ! Now she's a little concerned that she told him we were in La Pesca. Of course I'm sure that since we're the only BMW motorcycle cruising around these parts, it wouldn't have taken much detective work to find where we were anyway. He seemed to be asking Deb what she was doing tomorrow, but neither of us could figure out what he was saying for sure... maybe a good thing. On our return to the hotel, we found the electricity had failed in our section of the hotel. Deb had noticed a short buzzing away on a pole outside the hotel grounds, so I showed it to the manager. Don't know if that helped or not, but as of this time we still are without lights. Las luces. Yo no tengo las luces
