Jeep Jeep!!
Picture of the gang getting ready to set out for Fraser Island from left (Trev, Landy, Kim, Ti, Kev, Gareth, Ben, Maura and Helen)sup guys! Yes, we know we havn't done a blog for ages but i promise its not because we're being lazy (or too drunk!) we have actually been really busy.
We arrived in Byron Bay after Sydney for a few relaxing days on the beach before heading into Queensland for 10 days of activities. Great little town which is obviously what everyone thinks as it was hell trying to find a hostel! They've got the most beautiful beaches, one called Tallow which is great for surfing. However, as me and Trev are pretty pants at it and can't even stand up on one when its on the sand, we settled for body boarding instead. Great fun, but getting out there is so difficult as the currents are so strong and the waves huge, i almost lost my bikini a couple of times!! Theres a great little club there called Cheeky Monkeys. For you guys at home, think Priz but smaller, seedier, dirtier and more packed! They don't have an actual dance floor so you have to dance on the tables! Whos great idea was that! The bruises are still there!! And Trev got thrown out for being too drunk but still
Lake Mckensie.
Picture of the whole gang at lake Mackensie. Apparently you can drink the water as its so pure, however im sure more than a few people used it as a public toilet after the long trek to get there! managed to get the key off me so he can't have been that bad. We later found out though, that if theres not enough girls in a club, the bouncers will start throwning the guys out to even it out! Next day we went to the most easterly point in Oz up a Rainforest path to a lighthouse, the views were beautiful. It then started to rain and did not stop at all, even after we got on the bus the next morning.
We left Byron for Rainbow Beach were its the base to go Camping on Fraiser Island which is the biggest sand island in the world. We were put in a group of 9 people, given a huge 4 by 4, camping equipment, food and map and sent on our merry little way. The roads on the Island are the beaches and the driving is really difficult. We went to a Lake in the middle of the island called Lake Mckensie which is up a very rough dirt track through a Rainforest. The Lake was Stunning, its water is so pure that nothing, no animals, no plants live in it. Its surrounded by pure white sand that
Mans work!!
The guys doing the 'important jobs'!!!! just gleams. Its was comletely worth the sore bums after bumping up and down the pot holes! I then drove the truck back down the track and on the beach to another lake called Wabby. It was really hard work, first time i've driven since i left, what a place to get back into it! It was a long 40 min walk from the beach, again through rainforests. The Lake is at the bottom of huge sand dune, that when you climb it, it goes on for miles and miles. We all ran down the dune and jumped in the water which was so cool, losing your footing the whole way down. We've got a little video clip of it that we'll try and email. We then set up camp on the beach with another group and partied the night away under the stars (and tarpauline when it started raining again!).
We packed up the next morning and drove to another lake called Allom. Trev drove this time and managed to not spot a creek going into the sea along the beach. The drop was pretty big and i think there have our head imprints in the roof of
Womans work is never done!!!
Girls doing what they do best!!!! the truck! At the lake, we swam with little turtles. They were so cute and wern't scared of us at all (too many tourists). We then went to a place called Indian Head which is a cliff going out to sea where usually you can see lots of creatures but, unfortunatly we didn't see anything. We walk to The Champagne lakes that are like Rock Pools. We then found an Aboringinal camp site that someone had suggested we stay at. It was great, 20 people in a mozzy net covered platfrom. So nice not too have to set the camp up again as by this time there was sand in place we never knew existed. We all sat round the camp fire and listened to the stories of the two aboringal guys, Jo and Mark. They told us all about the creation stories and about surival in the bush. We also got visited by a family of Dingos which we hand fed, even though there was loads of signs saying how dangerous they are! We left the next morning for the barge back over and saw a pod of Dolphins swimming round the barge.
We stayed another night in
Bundle!
The first night out camping we all cracked open cheap wine and beers! It resulted in this sorry sight!!! Rainbow beach and spent the next day on the beach there. The sand is multicoloured thus the name of the place. You have to swim in certain areas between nets that stop Jelleyfish and sharks getting too close! Left on the bus that night for Airlie Beach.
