We arrived in Puerto Vallarta airport at 11:00am and a day before our friends. We were able to get some great flight deals by flying in a day early and so we decided to leave it up to the fates as to where we would land and live for 24 hours. We used Hotwire and picked a hotel that was the cheapest for a 2 star rating. We were destined to spend the day in Marina Vallarta.
Our hotel turned out to be the Flamingo Marina Vallarta Hotel and it was just what we wanted. Some place clean and roomy, with a pool, a palapa, a bar and views of palm trees. Right after checking into our huge room, we decided to hang out poolside and get some lunch. After several Coronas and reading time in the shade, we went to take a dip in the pool. As we were getting in, we saw an older woman walk up to our lounge chairs and start to move stuff off of Ronnie’s chair onto the floor. “Is she really doing that?” Ronnie asked. “Yes, and we gotta tell her to stop. That’s our stuff!” I replied.
We got out of
the pool and walked over to the lady. Ronnie politely told her that those were our things and she replied in rapid Spanish. Ronnie looked at me for help, so I told her in Spanish that those were our things. She said there was nothing on the chair when she got there. “We watched you move our things. We saw you do it.” I rebutted in Spanish trying to hold in frustration. She shook her head and said no. “There were only things on the other chair but not on this one.” She then turned her back to me. We were both in shock. So instead of making a scene over one chair, we grabbed our things to move. (She was even sitting on Ronnie’s towel, which he had to pull from under her.) As we left she added, “There was nothing on this chair.” I couldn’t help it. I had to reply. I just had too! “You know that isn’t true and what you did is very bad.” I said and we walked a few other chairs away. Turns out she was getting the chair for her angry looking husband, who came down, sat in the chair for a
couple minutes, then went back into the hotel. The woman then moved to a chair in the sun. If she wanted the chair for her husband who doesn’t do well in the sun, she could of just asked us. As we got up to leave I was tempted to ask her if she wanted our other chairs now too. I didn’t of course, but she just rubbed me the wrong way.
After a few hours by the pool, we got dressed and walked along the Marina. There were amazing boats that I usually only see in movies. We walked for a long time until we couldn’t handle the excursion and time-share salesmen. They are ruthless! They called to us and yelled at us if we didn’t reply. “What, you don’t like Mexicans? In Europe they don’t even say hello.” Since I was already edgy from our pool adventure, I would reply with snarky remarks like, “I have been to Europe and yes they do say hello.” Ronnie could tell I must have been getting hungry as I was getting grumpier by the minute.
We decided to go to the place that was the most crowded and had many
Too much tequila
but it tastes so good! Mexicans eating there. We want the real deal. We sat down and ordered some margaritas. We then ordered the shrimp plate. They brought us yummy shrimp soup and a bottle of tequila for the table. It apparently came with the meal. So did a salad, beans, tortilla and tostadas. After a few shots of tequila, they brought us our margaritas in a 40-ounce beer bottle that had the top cut off. After the AMAZING meal (we really miss good seafood) they brought us out some creamy dessert mescal and fried bananas for dessert. All of this for $140 peso each. (About $10 dollars) We were so full and happy. When we stood up though, we really felt our drinks. We decided to take a walk down the Marina again. We giggled and looked in stores. We then came across a massage parlor that had a funny sign…(see photo) A woman came out and offered us free 15 minutes massages. We decided to ask if we could get a full hour and the free manicure they advertised. Now, it was 9:30 at night but they said they were open until 11:00pm. To end a great night, we both got massages in
the same room and lovely manicures. We floated back to our room and quickly fell asleep.
In the morning, we ate at a little pancake house on the pier. We sipped coffee and talked about how we were so excited to meet up with our friends in Puerto Vallarta that night.
Marina Vallarta was a nice place to visit for one day, but being so close to the beach but not being there was hard for me. And I will never forget that shrimp shack!!!
