The town of Tulum is nothing spectacular - we came for the beaches!

We arrived in Tulum and were pleased to find that our hostel assigned us practically our own flat, a room in a different building than the hostel, in an apartment-type arrangement. We had fun listening to music (the cherubs have speakers and great taste in music), playing cards, and drinking rum. We also had a great time cooking food for ourselves, as we had a kitchen in our building and a bigger one at the hostel. Making food for four people is so much easier than for two. And much more fun! We ate guacamole, bruschetta, pasta and beers. The pasta was successful 50% of the time. One eventful dinner night, when we all were (of course) very hungry, we made a giant pile of pasta and a giant pile of sauce. Planning on eating the pasta in our room, to enjoy some awesome tunes, we started to transit with sauce in bowl and pasta in pot. Everything was going fine... until the pot broke. Pasta everywhere! Sad faces all around. Lorenzo, the Italian cherub and head chef, was destroyed. But the silver lining to this story is that new pasta was bought and prepared (in record time), and the dinner was fantastic.

Every day for three days we took a 5min bus ride from the town to the beach. The beach is the nicest beach we have ever seen - the white sand feels exactly like flour, the water is clear and warm, and there are not many other people. We found a daily soccer game set up by other young travellers (mostly British - there are so many of them!) near the waterfront. Soccer is SO much harder on sand, and with the players being all male except for us (no fear, we dominated anyway). We also played some games of beach volleyball, which we are more used to playing on sand.

There are ruins at Tulum. They are situated a little further down the coast from the beach, so we walked down the road to get there. It was hot! The buildings at the ruins were small, but had neat little carvings and passageways to explore. Since the ruins are spectacularly located right on a beachfront, you can see them from the swimming beach.

There are lizards everywhere, at all the ruins. They are almost more exciting than the ruins themselves!
