Cuzco to Arraial

Me 'n Che...Me 'n Che...Me 'n Che...

...in happier days in Malaysia.
I returned to Cuzco and spent a few days getting ready for the next part of my trip. I'd planned to go through Bolivia and then on to Argentina before heading for Brazil and the end of my voyage. Che Guevara had joined me in China, had been with me every step of the way since then and I wanted to bring him home to Argentina.

I'd sublet my apartment to someone and we'd each made a commitment to the other: I not to return before mid-February 2009 and her not to leave before then. In mid-November she sent me an email saying she was going to move out on 15 December. Without her covering the cost of my rent, I was not going to be able to continue the trip. I pointed out that we'd made a commitment, but her response, which some would call typically feminine, was “things change, you know”. Well, yes, things change but that's what a commitment is intended to take into account, especially one that lasts only a year. Otherwise, it's no commitment at all but just an arrangement that you maintain as long as it's convenient.

She tried unsuccessfully to find someone to replace her and on 15 December moved out. I would have had to return immediately had I not received financial help from someone very close and dear to me that allowed me to continue for another month.

So in Cuzco I bought a plane ticket for Rio de Janeiro and spent a couple of days waiting to leave. I could have gone to Bolivia for a bit more adventure, but I wanted a couple of weeks on a beach relaxing in the sun and swimming in a warm sea before returning to mid-winter Europe. I intended to use the time to begin to live the goals I'd set for myself.

On 30 December I flew from Cuzco to Lima, spent 12 hours in the airport, then took an overnight flight to Rio followed by a three-hour bus ride to a resort town east of Rio, called Arraial do Cabo. It was good to find again air I could breathe easily and shorts-and-sandals temperature.
