Just spent an amazing 5 days in Santiago, its a lovely city.
So day 1 I arrived, completed spaced out, thought about spending the first day relaxing at the hostel. But got talking to a couple of Irish girls and decided to go with them into the city. Walked to the main square and then up to the Japanese garden, from the top gives amazing views over the city with the Andes as the back drop. Drifted back to the hostel, and sat in the garden and had a couple of beers. But it wasn’t long before I was feeling very very sleepy! A good long nights sleep was so needed! Day 2 I walked my feet off around Santiago, followed the walking tour in the guide book, had lunch, went to the museum of pre-Colombian art (fascinating) and rounded off the day with a beer in a sunny courtyard. Great! Came back to the hostel and sat out in the garden, ended up joining another table of people. We spent a few hours in the hostel bar, and then a huge group of us moved off to a club. Excellent place, live music, fantastic atmosphere, crowd were going mad!
Next day was feeling a little fragile, so treated self to a day off (already) and spent a sunny afternoon, lounging by the pool side, even had a swim! That evening the hostel had a huge bbq, which turned into a massive party, brilliant, much silliness, dancing, and singing.
Saturday we spent the day at the races, unfortunately no hats or champagne, but did have a flutter, didnt win. But worth the experience, and a beautiful race track, with snow capped mountains behind. Decided to get pizzas together, funny to be eating dominos in Santiago, but it was good.
Sunday and a group of us have headed up to Valparaiso, they´re gonna hang out here for a day or so, I will start my Spanish classes tomorrow. Have met my host, she is a sweet and bubbly lady called Amada, thankfully she speaks English! and another guest, a young german girl, who also speaks brilliant English! Have only been here a few hours, but I think this is going to be a great city to stay in! And my liver will probably thank me too!

But where are the edible maggots?
Sarah, As the intrepid English explorer, I don't see any mention of your eating any foul tasting stomach turning maggots, or crunchy beetles. This will not do, you must eat some within the next few days, so if you ever meet Bear Grylls you can compare notes on which ridiculous choice of South American insect gives you the worst case of the runs! But clever girl, I see you have found an alternate cunning survival diet... BEER!
