Tulum
the house I'll take it from here, as Andy's working on catching us up even more...
From Belize, we boarded a chicken bus going to Tulum, where we met up with our friend Rob, and his friend Kate. We pulled into the awesome La Zebra hotel about 5 hours late (sorry!), had a few drinks, then went to the house that Rob had rented -- a beautiful, two story beach "bungalow" with stunning views, ocean breezes, and complete with the soundtrack of waves crashing to lull us to sleep and add to the party. Needless to say, it was a far cry from the places we had gotten so used to staying.
The next few days were spent taking our rented ATV's along the backstreets and highways of Tulum, exploring and swimming in the many different Cenotes (a system of underwater limestone caves, which are occasionally exposed to the surface when the limestone erodes), and breaking for beers and tamales. The beaches of Tulum were some of the most spectacular we've seen during our journey across Central America -- wide, pure white sand, crystal clear, warm, and best of all, mostly deserted. Stargazing and night swimming (no Andy, we never agreed

an amazing spot to lounge to skinny dip!) was fantastic as well. And to top it all off, on our last night in Tulum, we saw a large sea turtle laying eggs on the beach and fastidiously burying them in the sand. Tulum is definitely a place I would visit again. Thanks, Rob, for meeting us there and making it such an amazing vacation for us!
We sadly said goodbye to Rob at the Cancun airport, and boarded a bus and ferry to Isla Mujeres, where we met up with my parents for another little "vacation." Isla Mujeres, a short ferry ride from the hustle and bustle of Cancun, is a beautiful little island, well known by tourists (for good reason). Unfortunately, in 2003 hurricane Wilma destroyed much of the beach, so although there isn't too much sand to lounge around on, you could walk out about a half mile in the ocean and still be only waist deep in the clear water. This made my mother happy, as she was able to "snorkel" while still standing up, never having to worry that she would be in over her head...
We checked into the Avalon Reef Club, and got ready for my parents

our view from the house arrival, and for the five days ahead of us under the all inclusive plan (a rare treat while traveling on budget). We each took a hot water shower, turned on the AC, and went down to the beach where we met my parents with open arms, and put ourselves on a first name basis with the bartenders.
The pina coladas and margaritas were fantastic, and in between lounging on the beach, pool yoga classes, volleyball games, and being served drinks in the wonderful relaxing pool, my father rented a golf cart and jetted us around the island visiting some Mayan ruins, a sculpture park, and the turtle farm, where we saw hundreds of protected, newly hatched sea turtles. We also walked around town for lunch and browsed the many different shops on the island. Our nights were spent joining in on karaoke (even mom took the mike!), dancing and eating at the elaborate fiesta (good job dad and Andy!), and our evening ritual of enjoying the wonderful sunsets.
Mom and Dad, we really appreciate you coming down to meet up with us! We had an awesome time and miss you already!
