Galib & I have been accepted to do volunteer work through United Pakistan.

Check out their website at http://www.unitedpakistan.org.

We arrive leave for Karachi on March 1st, will spend some time with family there and then continue on to Islamabad. We will explore Islamabad with Galib's mom, Bai, and then we will take a van to the relief camp, which is about 2 hours north of Islamabad. We get to travel on the Karakoram Highway, which connects Pakistan to China. When you reach China, you know you've gone too far!!!

Last year, Galib & I decided that when he finished his Master's Degree, we would look into relief work, wherever it was needed. We feel very passionately about helping others and we know it will be a rewarding experience for both of us.

Excerpt from the United Pakistan website:

"On October 8, 2005, at 8:50 PST, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. The earthquake epicenter was located 100 kilometers north-northeast of Islamabad, along a fault associated with the Indian subcontinent moving northward at a rate of about 40 mm/yr and colliding with the Eurasian continent. Tremors were felt across a wide swath of South Asia, from central Afghanistan to western Bangladesh. The 2005 earthquake is a arguably the most debilitating natural disaster in Pakistan's modern history."

Galib & I will register at the Canadian Embassy in Islamabad. We will be at the camp for 5+ days, somwhere around March 11th-18th. Surprisingly enough, cell phones work at the site and there is electricity. The camp currently has 20 doctors and only 10 volunteers. United Pakistan provides food and shelter to 800+ people, which is approx. 159 families.

The pictures we have included are all taken from the United Pakistan website. We encourage you to check out the website for more information http://www.unitedpakistan.org

Bye for now,
Cinnamon & Galib
