ROMA-VIENNA 28.09.08
Km traveled 2700
I felt a bit sad and a bit scared, but then it was easier than I thought. We were just waiting for that. For the moment the train moved and put us back on our way. On the train from Rome to Vienna we're in a 6 berth couchette. We got the two top beds, which at first seemed to me good. But now you really need to have a laugh about it. When I got on my bed I just couldn't bear it, I was so scared! Of falling! Well now you can laugh, I had to tie myself with Michael's belt to the baggage racks to make sure I couldn't move in my sleep! I'm sure you enjoyed it! Anyway, the coach was apparently fully booked but when we left Rome there was only another man with us in the cabin. He looked German but was actually Dutch, working between Rome and Vienna. Unfortunately there's not much to do on a train like this, the corridor is very tiny and outside is getting dark and inside the cabin you can only lay on your bed. We watched Rome slipping by with its
Not much room thou!
On the amazing "Allegro" train from Rome to Vienna! first lights turning on while the sun disappeared. It looked beautiful, as it always looked to me. I made a first attempt to jump on my bed but I decided I'd rather stare at the night outside a bit more, and then I finally tied myself secure... The night was alright, with a few people that tried to get into the cabin (as the Dutch man advised, there are usual robberies on this train, so check out your stuff if you get on it!) and Michael mummified into his sheet until morning. A couple of times I had to check if he was still breathing...you never know! In the morning the Dutch man was gone, but there were instead a nice Spanish lady and a funny Italian man straight from the 80s. The man has got something to do with restaurants and I think travels a bit, or maybe was just trying to impress the Spanish lady. She seemed very nice, spoke a few languages, originally from Barcelona, she lived 10 years in Munich where her daughter was born and moved to Vienna 4 months ago. She apparently travels for work as well. Surprise, surprise OBB reserved for us breakfast,
not exceptional, but I wasn't even expecting one! So far so good, we got to Vienna on time and the sun was shining. Hard to get to a place and just jump on another train without even having a look outside the door... so we had a look and we thought it was maybe worth spending a couple of hours around. For 3,50€ you can fit two big backpacks + random bags in a locker for 24h and you're free to go! Mike inquired a “person” at the info point and we got a city map and advice to go towards the Belvedere Palace and Gardens that is just round the corner from Sudbahnhof. It was just perfect, have a nice walk around the gardens and under the sun. then honestly there was only one thing I always really wanted to see in Vienna and that I missed in my previous visit, the Secession Palace. So we head towards it, have a walk around. We find it, it looks great. It's just 5 minutes from St. Karl. If you can't get in just admires all the details of the main facade and the golden dome/sphere. Now we're back on the
tracks and we'll soon be in Bratislava, I just can't wait!

Just a few minutes walking from the Central Station we're at the Downtown Backpackers, apparently right in the middle of town. The 10 beds dorm is all painted yellow with a big blue door. It's very simple but looks comfortable. It looks like an old building, and I'm sure it is in fact! With big halls and stair core, tall doors, high ceilings. It seems like there are other four people in the room even if no one's around now. Definitely a man because there's a bed that has got an impressive number of things on it, all sorts of things, from food to photos to clothes and books. Then there's a girl you can tell from the shoes under the bed, and maybe a couple in a recessed part of the room. It's all good, shower and we go.
