Kununurra to Halls Creek to Derby
Kununurra - Finally got the spelling correct, I believe
Spent most of the morning on the Internet; updating blog, reading emails. Oh, yeh, and paying bills!!
Boab Book Store has good high speed internet for only $5.00 per hour.
Nice change of scenery. In sort of a valley, but a wide one, with some green, green grass.
Can you imagine a whole lot of one way bridges on such a main highway? There are quite a few. We even had to give way to a cow that was crossing one bridge. Not a very good highway in places; narrow, no shoulder and a bit of a drop off. No fences, no grids and lots of bridge construction (getting 2 lane bridges)
Saw 3 kangaroo and a lot of cattle. The cattle just wandering along the road side.
Need to inform Garmin that while their Australian map is good and we couldn’t do without it, that it is pretty out of date in some areas. Some highways have been straightened and the GPS shows us off in the boonies. Some city info isn’t too good either. But on
the whole we are really glad to have the GPS as it does keep us from getting too lost.
Halls Creek
Caravan park is ok, but does need some work to spruce it up a bit.
Town a bit noisy. First cool night for a while. Had to use a sleeping back for a cover.

Travel from Halls Creek to Derby
Dinner on the jetty at Derby, very good but very expensive. 37degrees during the day.

Went out to the jetty in the morning. Tide was rushing in, and I do mean rushing. When it comes in fast like that it stirs up the sand on the bottom. Hence no nice blue/green ocean. A muddy looking one.
Went to the small market and bought a Boab seed pod carving. Got stopped for another breathalyser. 50 years driving and the only 2 breathalysers have been here in Australia. Think of all the times I didn’t get caught!!!!
Bought a bigger table for outside eating and a small camping stove (need the bottle yet) at a small camping supply store in Derby.
Went to the Boab Tree goal (jail). Big huge, hollow tree that was
used to keep prisoners in, on their journey to the real jail.
And the longest water trough in the Southern Hemisphere, 120 metres long. Build of concrete. Was used when there were cattle drives to Derby for the cattle to be shipped out.

Broome
Spent part of the morning trying to get a gas bottle and get it filled. Finally managed to get the bottle at a camping supply shop and the bottle filled at a ‘Home Hardware’. Manual said the hand tighten the stove to the bottle. NOT. Flames spewing everywhere. And of course the $2.95 set of wrenches didn’t have one to fit. So no outside cooking for a while.
Went to Cable Beach. Oh by the way, we are staying at Cable Beach Caravan park. Nice place, big sites, good amenities, but little or no grass. Understandable, since we are getting to the end of the dry.
Anyway, Cable Beach. WOW lovely blue green ocean with miles and miles of lovely sand. Low tide so there was a lot of packed sand. Both of us had a good time in the lovely warm water, 29degrees!!!
Went for a camel ride in the late
afternoon. Good thing, one time. Didn’t think I was going to be able to walk after 45 minutes of the ride. Great experience.
Of course we both got a bit of sun burn. Must have been the reflection from the water.
