Jerez to Alicante

When we left Poland, we flew to Girona, then caught the bus to Barcelona airport, then flew to Jerez. When we were in Jerez last, we bought a car, and so now had to go back to pick it up (thinking now that we had all the correct paperwork, but we still didn’t, it’s a long story but just another problem in our move here!). Anyway finally we got the car with help from our friend Sankofa and spent two days driving back to Alicante along the coast.

First we passed Cordoba, then drove to the southernmost tip of Spain to Tarifa, a beautiful surfing and kite surfing beach. We went to a lookout point where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. From here we had a pretty clear view of Morocco, Africa. I did not expect it to be very mountainous but we could see the peaks clearly as the distance is only about 13 kilometres. We were so close that I even received a “Welcome to Morocco” SMS from their local network!

We drove on towards Gibraltar, a territory of the United Kingdom. If the passport control line was shorter, we would

have gone in and checked out the tailless monkeys that inhabit the rock. We used the showers on the beach, bought some food for dinner, and then found a place with a view to sleep, just past Malaga.

After an average sleep in our new car, we began driving further up the coast, arriving at Almeria, a place I’d love to go back to. Here, Mario arranged to meet with an old friend from Japan, Jesus. When Mario and his boss in Japan decided to create a bonsai school, Jesus was the first student! It was a great reunion for both of them. We had one of the best lunches I have had in Spain yet - tapas at a little local bar. It was very cheap too as when you order a drink, you get to choose from about 8 different tapas. I had the best potato dish and a great ratatouille. We also ordered a specialty of the area, a type of fish crumbed, fried and eaten whole.

After our second jump in Jesus’ community pool, we headed back to Alicante. On the way we took a detour and went to have a look at, supposedly,

a pristine perfect beach. It wasn’t but was interesting as it was in the middle of a dessert area!

Check out the pics from our drive!!!
