Le Moustoir Carnac

Carnac Brittany- Camping Le Moustoir

We arrived here on Sunday 7th after a 6 hour tiring drive down and walked round to select a pitch, finally deciding on this one, near the showers and swimming pools. I knew it would be a tricky reverse in but hadn’t counted on the audience that appeared. Martin unwisely built up the scene by saying ;

“ watch this and learn!” ...I ask you!

I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me and the car and van. ( I later found out that Pete one of the audience was a lorry driver) I fluffed the first approach by coming in too wide so pulled forward and started again. My trusty( ??) observer wasn’t being much help either. I tried again. Now clearly rattled and embarrassed, I failed. Suddenly a woman’s face appeared at my driver’s window....
“You’re doing sooo well !..... I just don’t know how you can do this!” or words to that effect.

The nightmare got worse,
A male face then appeared “ I’ll tell you which way to turn the wheel and when ...”

A red mist descended.
“ I know which way to turn the wheel” I growled.

The man beat a hasty retreat ( turned out later he was from Shirland near Alfreton!)
I could hear laughing and convinced myself the audience had grown and were enjoying the spectacle at my expense. I tried to collect myself and tried again. This time, thank God, I got the right approach and manically over revving the X Trail and overheating the clutch, reversed the bloody awful Z shaped route into the pitch bay. I was not happy.
Tired , embarrassed and feeling guilty that I had been less than welcoming of their well intentioned but unwanted “support” I bitched at Martin and sulked in the van for the rest of the night.

I needn’t have worried, next day they apologised for being over helpful and I apologised for being ungracious.
They turned out to be lovely people and we were invited for a drink before lunch. By 3 pm we had not had any lunch and several glasses of wine and beer later wobbled back to the 'van to get some food to soak up the alcohol! Had we got Doherty clones as neighbours? (Cropston Close Joke!)

In payback
Emergency supplies?Emergency supplies?Emergency supplies?

Well the French are a nation of romance!
we invited them for a drink at 6 the next night .

Our guests; Terry and Jackie, seasoned European ‘vanners and Pete and Chris and their son Shane (on hol for a few weeks). Topics revolved predictably, around getting the best out of touring and we picked up tips for the future. We whinged collectively about what was wrong with Britain and steadily downed the vin rouge, beer and Bacardi. A buffet was hastily put together, supplemented by takeaway pizza.
Chris brought round a big bottle of Baileys and ice cubes and that finished off the evening nicely.

Carnac is a neat, pleasant ,if touristy, town on the south Brittany coast and is famous for its prehistoric megaliths. Thousands of them around the town lined up for miles! Very mysterious. We went for a walk around them Wednesday (10th) and got soaked in the rain.

The weather continues mixed but has been largely dry in the day and around 20 degrees so quite pleasant.
This week we have visited Vannes and Concarneau and explored up and down the coastal resorts round Carnac.

My (borrowed) bike still lies threatening to rust locked to the fence at the back of the 'van. I promise I will try..soon.
Martin however, has had two longish runs out for "a bit o'dinner" with Terry . (Who has a sat-nav on his bike!) He came back very sweaty and knackered as Terry cycles like "Phil Hartley on speed". He had to have a dip in the icy outdoor pool to recover!

We are planning to move on on Monday 15th to have a couple of days around La Rochelle on the atlantic coast, as we make our way to the Dordogne Valley.
Got to get settled on't new site and draw't curtains in time for the match on Tuesday ( Liverpool of course).
