Had a wonderful breakfast this morning of potato scones and strawberry jam, YUM!!! Then met up with the free tour that was put on by the same company we did the tour with in Amsterdam, our guide was excellent and made the experience quite entertaining with true and funny stories. We saw Edinburgh castle (from the outside, we'll be going inside tomorrow), the oldest house in Edinburgh, Robert Burn's house, the Grassmarket, Lady Stairs close, St. Charles Cathedral, the only legal place to spit on the ground in the city (it's the picture of the stone heart), Greyfriars Kirk and cemetery, that is known for it's famous mascot Bobby the dog (Booby was John Gray's dog and not only followed him in life but also in death. After his master's death, Booby spent the next 14 years visiting his grave everyday until his own death.), the Elephant Room (where J.K. Rowling wrote the beginnings of Harry Potter on napkins), and ended in Princes St. Gardens, home of a living cuckoo clock.

Afterward we walked down the Royal Mile to Hollyrood Palace, took some pictures, and then hiked up Salisbury Crags that is in between the much taller mountain called Arthur's Seat and Hollyrood. It was well worth the hike, the vistas of the city were incredible. From there were trekked back across to the other side of Holyrood, and up to Calton Hill, which was the first public park in Edinburgh. Several monuments grace the property including the Dugald Stewart monument, the Portuguese Canon, the National Monument, which resembles the Parthenon, the Nelson Monument, and the Robert Burns Monument.

This all made for a grand total of nine straight hours of walking around the city. At this rate we'll lose and entire pant size by next week! Did I mention we tried haggis too?!

So far, the evening has been uneventful, as we stayed in the hostel, cooked pasta and are now headed back the the room to shower and go to bed, (and write postcards!!!). Tomorrow, it's off to Newcastle!

Cheers,
Britany
