Watching a baby giraffe trying to swallow a whole apple is a bit of a scary sight particularly if you are the ones that have fed the apple to the unfortunate beast. As you can imagine it takes a while for the apple to get down its very long throat - fortunately it did manage to recover but by that time we'd run off and hid on the bus hoping that if it did die we could make a quick get away. The baby giraffe was one of the pets at the cheeta reserve that we camped at. While most of the cheeta were semi wild there were three big cats that had been orphaned and raised by the owners. This meant we had a chance to pet them although Eric decided not to do his usual trick of jumping out on them as his does to Tessa.
Our next destination was the the amazing Etosha National Park. The wildlife on display here is simply stunning. We were very lucky with all the animals we saw. On our game drives we saw lions, giraffe, elephants, rhinos, gemsbok (Oryx), springbok, kudu and many many zebras. A few of these animals like the springbok and oryx we knew quite well already having eaten them in Swakopmund....yum yum.
Camping in the park was great and we were very happy with the big fence around the campsite.
We got up both mornings at 4 am to sit besides a floodlit watering hole, because it was so early no-one else was there. The absolute highlight was when we were visited by 4 lionesses with 5 cubs! We were a bit bad and tried to take a photo using flash (not really allowed but we were the only people there) it didn't seem to bother them until one of the lionesses looked up and was staring right at us -it was then that we noticed that the fence wasn't very high and sat very still for the rest of their visit.
Driving further north we are now chilling out at the very cool Ngepi camp (www.ngepicamp.com) on the banks of the Okavango River before crossing the border into Botswana and heading into the Okavango Delta for a two day mokoro (canoe made from a dug out tree) safari. We think that they are trying to prepare us for the lack of toilets/bathrooms etc on the safari as this campsite has so many amazing toilets! There is the view with the loo, the toilet of Eden and many other strange toilets tucked around the campground. We are also getting used to the sound of hippos at night..sort of.
