Errors in Communication

The friendly local Slovenian guy decided to take us under his wing at the bus stop near the Italian border, he too was waiting for the elusive white minibus that was supposed to come and whisk us across the border. His English was limited, but he tried to communicate with a smile and determination ... and we managed to convey that we were trying to get across the border too, and travelling on to Lake Bled.

Finally the minibus came and we piled on board, and crossed over into Slovenia. When we got to what we suspected was the Nova Gorica train station (although it was tiny and unnamed) he held us back indicating that our destination lay further on ahead. The bus continued on and we arrived at the bus station and he smiled triumphantly to indicate our arrival. He’d assumed we were taking the bus to Bled, not the train! So we raced back to the train station, only to have just missed our train and to find that the next train was not for another 4 hours ...

Bled was worth the wait though. A little town perched on the edge of a lake, dotted with a small island, and a perched on an cliff overlooking the lake and the Julian Alps as the backdrop to finish it all off. There was loads to do there: cycling, hiking, swimming, rowing on the lake, and even a summer tobaggon ride down the mountain. We rode out to the nearby Vintgar Gorge and walked along the 1600m walkway that crisscrossed along the river and afforded us stellar views.

Ljubljana was a really chilled out capital, with a relaxed ‘big town’ vibe that made it easy to laze away a couple of days here enjoying the cafe culture along the river. Loads of cafes line the banks of the river selling all sorts of delicious concoctions including fabulous icecream cocktails, so strong that we wobbled out of there after just one! The annual Ljubljana festival was on whilst we were there so there was some cultural events, live performances and art installations all centred around the famous Triple Bridge.

We took a day trip out to the Skocjan caves which were pretty awesome, measuring 100m+ in height some areas, and contain both wet and dry sections and a dodgy little swing bridge that you traverse 50 metres in the air. They were like nothing we'd ever seen before.

This is the place
A year ago I found this place by accident. It was so beautiful! I'm traveling a lot and seen a lot, but this place will share the top place with another nature attractions in Europe. I will go there again!
