Lake Titicaca
the ride to the lake We spent most of the day travellign from Calca Canyon to Puno9 so arrived quite late. We had dinner in Puno and then went to a bar to have a few Pisco sours.
The following day (8th) we left for lake titicaca. We were picked up from outr hotel by taxis that were like tricycles, they were loads of fun!
We look at boat out to the lake, it took about 2 and half hours to arrive at the first island. We had an uphill walk to the top to were the villiagers live and to have lunch! Again the walk was tough, especially as we had some of our stuff in backpacks.
We had some local dishes for luch which was quinua soup and trout. This was really nice and we brought bracelets from a local little girl. and had a look around the island. We when left for another island which we would be spending the night at. When we arrived we met our ´mum´This is what the tour guide kept calling her. She was really friendly but didnt speak a word of English, she only spoke the local language and Spanish and with my limited Spanish the communication was a bit difficult.
We droped our things of at her house, which was near the top of the island so was a tough walk to get there. We then went to play ffotball with the local girls. Im not the best at football but neither were they so was fun!
Later we went to the top of the island to watch the sun set. Again was g¡hard work to get to the top, there was a spirtual place at the top of the island, and we were told that if you walk around it anti clockwise 3 times you can make a wish! I think me and helen are likely to have made the same wish!
After watching the sun set we made our way back down the mounatin. We had been walking for a while and we didnt recognise the pat5h and then realised that we had taken the wrong way! Really not good, we then had to climb up the mounatin again to try and find the right path! I was glad we had our torches because byt he time we got back it was really dark!
We had dinner that evening with the family, which was the ´mum´and her mother who only spoke the local language so we could say anything to her! We were given soup and a rice dish but could eat it all! The old lady made us feel really guilty so we tried our best to eat as much as we could!
The houses on the island didnt have any electricity or running water so the only light was by candle and we had one in our room and and the toilet was at the back of the house which really stunk and was a bit like a hole in the ground. Helen was trying to scare me saying it reminded her of the blare witch project, not good when your stood outside on your own!
That night we went to the local disco. We had to dress in their local clothes and our ´mum´ helped us dress in. We had a lot of layers as I still had all my clothes on I´d been wearing that day too!
The disco was really fun and we watched some of theri dances then danced with our ´mum´and the tour guide.
The night was really cold I had my sleeping bag and lots of layers but I didnt sleep that well! In the morning our ´mum´cooked us pancakes which were lovely but she kept giving us more and more and I felt bad not to eat them so we forced ourselves to eat them all!
We had also been given a wooley hat when we had arrived it had been made by the family we had been staying with and we had to wear them all the time so out ´mum´was able to identify us. That morning we asked to buy the hat for 20 sols (4 pounds) as we were told not to give tips tp the family. She was so grateful for us to buy the hats she hugged and kissed us.
We left the island that morning and then went to the floating islands. Thses werte amazing. They had been built on reeds and everything there was made from reeds, the houses and even boats which we took a ride on!
We when returned to Puno. There had been a national strike that day so all the roads had been blocked so there was no transport on the roads. We did manage to get a push bike taxi back to the hotel but not much was open in Puno so we just pent some time in the internet cafe.
