I’m so excited Jon’s in Australia! Katy and I got a cab to the airport and anxiously awaited for our boys, who were coming in on the same flight, to arrive. How exciting it was when Jon finally came through that door! It’s fantastic to see him again. ^__^ I really missed that boy…
We caught a taxi back to IH. It’s a good thing Jon sat in front with the cabbie, because he ended up explaining the primaries and lots of democracy to the driver. We also ended up hearing some about how Australian politics works.
When we got back to International House, we lugged Jon’s suitcases up to my room, trying to be quiet because it was still quite early. Jon got to see my room door, which Nell had decorated for him the night before to welcome him to Australia (our whole group was just a wee excited about the boys coming).
We headed down to grab breakfast, where we met up with Trent, Casey and Nell. How exciting! After eating, I packed for the day and dragged Jon off to class with me. We first did a quick campus tour, I tried to get
Kookaburras
I've got a slight obsession. I think they're super-cool
him oriented some before classes started. After we sat through genetics, we then found some food for Jon for a lunch before Philosophy. Jon got some yogurt and other munchies from Darwin’s, the refractory (cafeteria) in the biology library. I ate my packed lunch, and then we went to class. I think Jon enjoyed philosophy (the lecturer is usually pretty amusing). I then sent Jon off to explore the Uni shops while I was in Philosophy tutorial.
I met Jon after my tutorial, and we headed back to my room for a surprise. I grabbed the picnic backback I’d borrowed from Nell and had packed earlier, and then went for a walk down to the UQ lakes. We had a nice walk around, looking at the birds, before settling down for a surprise picnic, with lamingtons (yum!), Aussie candy, juice, and some other assorted goodies. It was fun to surprise Jon. ^__^
We walked around the lake looking for cockatoos and water dragons without success (although we did find turtles and eels in the lake). I promised that we’d go back the next day until we found them.
We snuck Jon into dinner (the swiper was broken)
Dingo
D-i-n-g-ooo, and Dingo was his name-o. and had a lousy dinner. The food was so bad, that the whole lot of us (Jon and I, Keith and Katy, Trent and Nell, and Casey) decided that we should get our own dinner. We headed off to the Vill and grabbed some proper dinner (or rather, dessert—ice cream, shell, and Milo) from Coles.
We ate dessert in Trent’s room and just hung around for a bit. Jon and I finally went off to go to bed, completely exhausted and very happy to be seeing each other again.
On Wednesday, my art class had to go into the city for a field trip. We caught the bus from the UQ Lakes station (I’ve never taken a bus from there before, except during O-Week), and headed into the city. We ended up at the art gallery, and saw one other girl in the class. We waited in front of the Art Gallery for a long time and no one showed up. Giving up, we decided to head off our separate ways. On the way back towards the bus stop, however, we met up with some of the other girls in our class, who informed us that we were
Emu!
Looking quizzical supposed to meet the art class at the Modern Art gallery, not the regular art gallery. Ooops.
So we showed up late to class, but it ended up being OK. After the art lecture, Jon and I caught a quick lunch at Subway and bumbled around to find a bus station that would take us to Lone Pine. I decided to skip out on MARS that day, it being the most disappointing class that I’ve ever taken in college (at home in the states, or here at UQ), and go play with koalas and ‘roos instead.
Jon and I caught the bus from Anne St. to Lone Pine, where it was essentially tourist-free (huzzah!). Jon got his koala photo right away (I rushed him there, because I could see that there was no line), and then we walked around the sanctuary looking at the birds, koalas and dingos. I got some good photos of Jon petting kangaroos and an emu and looking very dubious, but those are on his camera. ^__^
We got back by taxi from Lone Pine (the bus was being stupid and late) and I was being very high strung… We caught the taxi
we’d scheduled earlier and headed off to the airport to begin our trip to Cairns and Sydney!
